Description
To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION at RM Sothebys' Munich event, 23 November 2024.
- One of only 887 examples of the iconic Aston Martin DB5 with Superleggera saloon body
- Uprated with Vantage-specification triple-Weber carburettors
- Finished in factory-correct Dubonnet with attractive grey cockpit trim
- Retains its matching-numbers engine
Although produced for just two years from 1963 to 1965, the Aston Martin DB5’s role in the James Bond franchise has made it the marque’s most celebrated model—as well, of course, as one of the most capable thoroughbreds of its day.
Superficially, the DB5 looked little different to the final DB4s, but beneath the skin were some exciting upgrades. A larger bore stretched the straight-six to 3,995-cc, while the triple-SU carburettors, 15-inch wheels, and Girling disc brakes were borrowed from the outgoing DB4 Vantage. Developing 285 PS, the uprated engine was usually mated to a fully synchromesh ZF five-speed transmission.
Purchased through J Blake of Bold Street, Liverpool, this DB5 left the factory on 16 April 1965. Finished in Dubonnet (an attractive hue it still wears), the Aston Martin was equipped with chrome wheels, a heated rear window, and Motorola radio with electric aerial. The history file reveals that by 1971 the car had covered 57,067 miles, while further research suggests it may have spent time in Scandinavia and North America. More recently, this Aston Martin is known to have resided in the Middle East. The DB5 wears an older restoration yet will require mechanical inspection prior to being driven again. Converted to left-hand drive, and equipped with DB5 Vantage-specification Weber carburettors, this beautiful machine marks the pinnacle of the David Brown era.
