Description
Our Alpine A110, an automotive jewel par excellence, was delivered new in 1972 to Alpine's Dieppe headquarters. It was first used as a W-Garage before being registered under number 5682-HK-76 on April 12, 1973. Bearing the serial number 20002 (body 10002), it represents the very essence of the legendary Alpine brand. As the first 1600 SC to be registered, it enters the annals of the brand's history, preceding number 20001, which was a prototype dedicated to the Alpine design office. With only three owners to its credit, this mythical example has spanned the decades, adding to its aura and timeless charm.
This 1600 SC version of the A110 sedan features the new wishbone rear axle of the A310 1600, released the previous year. It's possible that the 20002 was fitted with the Bosch electronic fuel injection of the A310 1600VF and R17 Gordini, according to some of the mechanical elements found.
After its acquisition by Mr Philippe Delahoulière, it was prepared in Group IV for hill-climbing, then sold to Alain Douarche in 1978. The latter meticulously prepared it for Group V homologation, with an 1860cc engine prepared by Marc Mignotet. Douarche took part in three seasons of circuit racing with this Alpine.
In 2007, it was acquired at auction by its current owner at Artcurial. Competing in a number of historic Group V events, its engine was replaced by an 8-valve 1800cc derived from Benny Raeppers' 16-valve berlinetta, after the Mignotet engine experienced a number of problems. The gearbox was changed for a dog-clutch gearbox, offering remarkable ease of use and resistance.
Completely restored by the renowned Ollier body shop in Carqueiranne (Var), it now sports the look of an A110 BIS rally car, with riveted bubble fenders, no spoiler and no aileron. Although it's not one of the 12 factory-built A110 BISs, it's built exactly like one, with a dog-clutch gearbox and enhanced reliability. Its smooth engine and behavior on the roads of the Rallye du Var bear witness to this.
