Launched as a design study by Marcelo Gandini (then head designer at Bertone) at the 1967 Montreal Expo, the Alfa Romeo Montreal immediately became a centre of attention. Originally designed as a mid-engined sports car the production version appeared with a classic front engine design driving the rear wheels. The 2.6 litre V8 with four overhead camshafts and a mechanical SPICA fuel injection was based on the Tipo 33 competition engine but modified for street use and coupled to a 5-speed gearbox. A rather steep new prize of around 40’000 Swiss francs, coupled to the 1973/74 oil crisis, meant that sales always remained rather low, and until February 1977 only 3’925 of the gorgeous Gran Turismo could be sold. Our example is a Swiss delivery, sold through garage Ch. Sarasin in Geneva and first registered on the 7th April 1975 in the Vaudoise canton. In 1994, within 66’000 kilometres driven, the Montreal, after a brief stay with another owner in Vesenaz, was taken over by the current keeper. In the following years the sports car was driven sparingly but always well maintained. In 2020 in connection with a MOT-preparation all liquids and filters as well as all four brake callipers were replaced. Painted in its elegant “224 Verde Metalizzato” colour with a beige fabric interior and electrically operated windows the Montreal, with now roughly 73’500 kilometres driven, presents itself in good to very good original condition. The SPICA injection system is working perfectly with the engine running smoothly and the gearbox is shifting the way it should. The last Veteran MOT was completed in August 2020.
