Description
Regarded by many premier automotive historians and collectors as the finest pre-war sports car ever built, the mystique of the Alfa Romeo 8C is only surpassed by the joy of those fortunate to engage in the driving experience. The engine design, fully and passionately developed by Vittorio Jano, was a revelation of engineering years ahead of its implementation. Jano himself was nothing short of genius, but his genius was not simply technical. His designs were both durable and efficient. His demanding work ethic and insistence on excellence were legendary, but they resulted in creations that would literally build the foundation of Alfa Romeo as a motorsports world leader. In 1925, just one year after constructing his first straight-eight engine for Alfa Romeo, they won the very first World Championship. Over time, the design for the emergent 8C progressed with a range of improvements, all the while resulting not just in numerous racing victories, but literally defining what high performance racing engines were all about. Further still, in proof of their versatility, select examples of these superlative engines were also fitted to majestic coach-built road cars.
The company Pur Sang was founded in Paraná, Argentina, by Leonidas Anadón with the goal of creating Bugatti Type 35 replicas that mirror the originals in every way. Pur Sang utilizes old-world artisanal construction techniques, relying on the methodologies of the pre-war era to assemble recreations that are as convincing to drive as they are to behold. Rather than source original components, the company devotedly casts and forges replica hardware that is built to blueprinted specifications in the original manner, while hand-beating body panels on custom bucks built to the original dimensions. As Pur Sang slowly perfected its approach, the company began taking on the builds of a handful of other classic pre-war racing models, including the Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Monza.
Like any other Pur Sang this magnificent 8C is so much more than a just replica, it is a true recreation and accurate down to the smallest pieces of hardware. In the interest of usability, contemporary considerations are given to metallurgy, the use of plain bearings for the internals, and more efficient seals and gaskets. The gorgeous 2.3 litre supercharged straight-eight is a marvel of engineering, even by modern standards. Recreated to the highest of standards, this is a strong running and utterly addicting machine with a uniquely guttural soundtrack.
Wearing evocative Targa Florio style 2-seat bodywork, it is finished in gorgeous black paint with deep saddle brown leather in the minimalist cockpit. The basic bodywork includes period correct lamps, a side mount spare wheel, high-mounted Grand-Prix-style exhaust and a single Brooklands windscreen for the driver. It is a bare-bones machine, the essence of a pre-war competition car.
The car is currently US registered and is ready to be enjoyed on your favourite country roads or whilst competing in a classic rally. For a mere fraction of the investment of an original, this Pur Sang Alfa Romeo 8C Monza is a driver’s dream and would be a great addition to any classic car collection.
