Description

Chassis No. 915783

Engine No. SS928084

Before World War II, Alfa Romeo was at its competitive and engineering peak, with names such as Vittorio Jano, Gioacchino Colombo, and Enzo Ferrari among its ranks designing some of the greatest racing cars of the 20th Century. Jano's ingenious dual-overhead-cam straight-eight engine in the mighty Championship-winning 1924 Alfa Romeo P2 formed the basis for four and six-cylinder inline power plants that would power the firm's sports and road cars well into the 1950s.

Among them was the 6C 1500 powered by a normally aspirated dual overhead-cam inline-six, its Sport variant proving to be as dominant as Alfa's Grand Prix racers including victory at the 1928 Mille Miglia. The 6C's inline-six continued to grow in displacement and see racing success, arriving at its final road-going iteration with the 6C 2500 introduced in 1938. While retaining its pre-war DNA, the 6C would be built until 1952 thanks to improvements including a redesign of the inline-six by Bruno Treviso, a steel ladder frame chassis, independent front suspension, hydraulic brakes, a rear swing-axle, and a range of stunning coachbuilt bodies.

One of Pinin Farina's most elegant designs for the 6C 2500 was the graceful post-war Cabriolet body offered here. Distinctively modern with its pontoon fenders and limited brightwork, it also retained some delicate pre-war Art Deco touches including its iconic vertical grille flanked by stylish horizontal vents. Sitting atop a Passo Corto 2,700-mm short wheelbase chassis, this particular "SS" Cabriolet, with its triple carburetor Super Sport-specification 2.5-liter twin-cam six-cylinder engine rated at 105 horsepower, would have been among the most expensive and powerful configurations available in the period.

According to its Certificate of Origin, this exceptional Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Super Sport was manufactured on 10 May 1949, and subsequently dispatched to Pinin Farina to receive its Cabriolet bodywork on the desirable short-wheelbase chassis. The car was initially registered on 5 September with Genova license plates "GE 46353," purchased by the prominent Italian sugar company Eridania Zuccherifici Nazionali. The 6C was among the most luxurious automobiles available worldwide at that time, commanding 4.4 million Italian lire when new.

Eridania sold the Alfa Romeo to Fidia S.R.L. of Genova on 25 September 1957 for 300,000 lire. The owner of Fidia, Antonio Luscardo, subsequently sold it to Arnaldo Ginocchio on 24 March 1971. Ginocchio kept the car until 1989 when it was acquired by Mondo VI SpA. The car changed ownership again on 30 March 1995, passing to Ugo Isgrò, who sold the car a year later to its next long-term caretaker.

In this ownership, the Registro Italiano Alfa Romeo (RIAR) inspected chassis 915783 on 22 May 1997 and completed its certification on 10 June of that year, commending the car for adhering to factory specifications. In 1998, it also received an ASI identity card, which remains with the car. In 2019, after 23 years of ownership, the previous owner parted with his cherished 6C 2500 SS, selling it to the current distinguished collector in Northern Italy in May of that year.

Today, the Alfa Romeo remains remarkably preserved, maintaining its original Oxblood leather interior and benefiting from six documented Italian owners since new. The bodywork features Bordeaux paint complemented by a beige convertible soft top. The car is furnished with RIAR and ASI homologation papers as well as a Certificate of Origin from Alfa Romeo which confirms that chassis 915783 retains its matching-numbers 2.5-liter DOHC six-cylinder Super Sport engine.

As one of just 383 short-wheelbase, 105-horsepower Super Sport examples built, this rare Pinin Farina-bodied Alfa Romeo represents one of the firm's most desirable early post-war models. Today, it remains in marvelous condition, poised to participate in all major historic rallies and concours events.
