Description
The "Tipo 102" series Alfa Romeo 2000 received a minor facelift as it entered the 1962 model year, ushering in the "Tipo 106" 2600 range powered, as its name suggested, by a six-cylinder engine with an increased displacement of 2.6-liters. This dual overhead camshaft, inline-six unit was significant as the last of its kind to power an Alfa Romeo before production shifted to four-cylinder engines after 1968. Adopting the three body styles of its predecessor – a factory-bodied Berlina sedan, a two-door Sprint coupe by Bertone, and a two-seater Spider convertible by Carrozzeria Touring – the latter of the three was the rarest with only 2,255 2600 Spiders being produced.
The Spider was also the most powerful, with its all-aluminum engine sporting a trio of twin-choke Solex carburetors allowing it to produce 145 horsepower. In a chassis measuring over eight inches (220 mm) shorter than the Berlina and weighing only 2,822 lbs (approximately 1,280 kg), the Spider was a lithe, high-speed roadster capable of a top speed of around 125 mph. Its performance was further bolstered by four-wheel disc brakes and a five-speed manual transmission, making it one of the most technologically advanced sports cars of the period.
This rare and desirable Touring-bodied Spider was delivered new to Nuremberg, Germany in March 1966 – costing a hugely expensive 26,150 DEM (approximately $14,482) when new, whereas a Mercedes-Benz 230 SL was only 21,650 DEM ($11,990). An extensive file of invoices shows that the Spider was treated to a highly detailed, multi-year restoration from 2006 to 2008 under previous ownership, as well as regular maintenance since its completion. Additionally, a digital copy of the Alfa's original Kraftfahrzeugbrief (vehicle log book) documents a traceable history of known German owners over the nearly six decades.
Beautifully finished in iconic Rosso with a black leather interior and matching canvas soft top, this attractive 2600 Spider is TÜV valid through August 2025 and is ready for immediate enjoyment.
