The white star emblem of Montblanc pens signifies more than just a logo; it’s often considered a symbol of status, refinement and sophistication. The rounded, six-pointed star representing the snow-capped Mont Blanc hasn’t changed since it was designed in 1913 – and neither have the brand’s strict values concerning the production process. All the detail work, polishing and fine shaping is still done entirely by hand. As a brand closely tied to the writing culture, Montblanc has celebrated the headline names in world literature by crafting exquisite themed writing instruments since 1992. This year’s Writers Edition pen has been designed in homage to the British-Irish satirist, Jonathan Swift.
Every detail of this year’s special edition has been carefully designed to reflect Swift’s legendary masterpiece, Gulliver’s Travels. The exclusive pen is a miniature rendition of the fantasy world in which Gulliver – the most famous character created by Swift – found himself. A closer look at the writing instrument reveals that the pen’s black lacquer barrel is adorned with multi-layer inlays to imitate the ropes used to bind Gulliver to the ground in Lilliput. In turn the cap is made of black resin and shaped like Gulliver’s tricorn – a typical three-cornered hat popular among tradesmen of the 18th Century.
Similarly, the platinum-plated clip of the pen draws inspiration from the staircase the Mayor of Lilliput had to climb to be able to talk to Gulliver. Finally, the most important part of the instrument, the nib, is made of rhodium-plated 18-carat gold and has been delicately decorated with an elaborate engraving illustrating the army of Lilliput marching between the legs of the gigantic hero.
The Montblanc Writers Edition 2012 is not only a tribute to a great author, but also to the age-old traditions of the brand itself. By combining superior quality with classic design and art, Montblanc has created a unique masterpiece of its own, certain to make the simple practice of writing words a true pleasure.
