To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION at RM Sothebys' Munich event, 25 November 2023.

  • One of 464 BMW 328s built from 1936 to 1940
  • Powered by a rebuilt 2.0-litre inline six paired with four-speed manual Volvo gearbox
  • Shows signs of prior restoration; fitted with rare, slotted magnesium wheels
  • Accompanied by its FIVA Identity Card further to toolkit and jack
  • An ideal contender for the various historic rallies it is eligible to enter

Considered to be a technical marvel upon its introduction in 1936, the BMW 328 was a major departure from heavier pre-war cars. Arriving a lithe, lightweight, and well-balanced vehicle, the 328 was ready to race—and so it did, securing 1st in the Eifelrennen Nürburgring, helmed by Ernst Henne. In 1940, a 328 took victory at the Mille Miglia with Fritz “Huschke” von Hanstein and Walter Bäumer stretching out a dominant five-minute lead. A second Works-run BMW 328 finished in 2nd, with two privateer 328s slotting into 5th and 6th positions.

While this cream over blue leather example is believed to have been built in 1938, its history can be traced as early as 1955, when it was acquired by a resident of Coupeville, Washington. He is believed to have owned the car until his death in 2004 and in 2014 it was imported to the Czech Republic. Since then the engine has been rebuilt and the car is fitted with a four-speed Volvo gearbox (a common upgrade for the synchromesh on all gears), an additional oil cooler, and a rare set of slotted magnesium wheels with integral brake drums. It is accompanied by its FIVA Identity Card, a spare period-correct BMW 328 gearbox (numbered 56073), spare wheel bolts, and toolkit.

This handsomely restored 328 Roadster could be an ideal contender for the historic rallies and tours it is eligible for.
