"The 4973cc, R129 Mercedes-Benz SL500 carried on the tradition of the fast and reliable grand touring convertible from Mercedes-Benz. Born out of the earlier 500 SL models, the new SL500 featured many new and innovative ideas for the time such as controlled electronic damping, automatically expanding rollover bar and a more modern multi-link rear axle. An electrically operated hood, windows, door mirrors and seats made this model easy and comfortable to live with. With powerful engines, stopping power was aided by anti-locking braking as standard. During 1995, a mild facelift was carried out to the model range, which included revisions to the headlights, taillights and several new features adopted as standard including side air bags, automatic climate control and ESP. The SL Edition was available for the year 2000, as part of a limited run of cars to celebrate the end of production of the R129 generation. The SL Edition came with 18” multi-piece alloy wheels, perforated leather seats, aluminium instrument and gear selector surrounds, vented brake discs and most importantly, a panoramic hardtop.
This example has been owned by the present vendor since new and was specified in Mystic Blue with a black leather interior. The car has covered just over 45,000 miles in the past 23 years. The interior presents very well, with only minor wear on the seat bolsters. The paintwork is showing signs of some lacquer peel in places, mainly on the bonnet and boot areas. It is supplied to auction with a duplicate service book, showing service stamps from Klasse of Fulham, Mercedes-Benz specialists.
