Rolls-Royce has been busy selling the Silver Shadow for several years when the brand decides to make an open variant of the sedan. The Silver Shadow is six years old when its open brother, the Corniche, comes onto the market in 1971. A stylish convertible, actually the highest achievable in the field of open cars. A timeless model that appears to be able to last for a long time, it was not until 1996 that the curtain fell on the model.
The very elegant Corniche that we offer here is one of the second series. This appears in 1977 and is immediately recognizable by the slightly heavier bumpers with less chrome. This copy dates from 1984 and is executed in the very popular combination of black lacquer with biscuit-colored leather. Before we describe the condition in detail, we first report the original mileage, then you immediately understand why the car looks so fantastic: 59,500 kilometers!
Well, actually 37,237 miles because this excellent Corniche is originally delivered in America. The model is extremely popular there, so it is no wonder that many Corniches originated on the other side of the ocean. The copy you see here comes from the first owner, from whom we bought the car. You can see from the interior how good and original the car is, the car has only been provided with a new coat of paint, as the original has become somewhat dull and dull over time. No damage, no rust but the Corniche is so good and original that it deserves the shine it had in 1984 when it was delivered by Carriage House Motor Cars Ltd, New York. The instruction book that comes with the car also shows this, it also states that this car was originally delivered in Black Masons (color code 95100701) and Tan upholstery (code 4134).
Well, we don't really need to describe the bodywork, because of the professionally applied paint it is in exceptionally beautiful condition. The chrome work, the lighting parts and chrome wheels are also 'matching' with the condition of the car.
The interior is beautifully original and exudes the luxury and opulence that belongs to a Rolls-Royce. The upholstery is original and in beautiful condition. No new upholstered interior can compete with this! The very supple leather of the seats and rear seat has been well maintained, so that it has retained all its appearance. The leather on the door panels and the dashboard is also original and beautiful. The wood parts that are abundantly present in the interior are all in excellent condition, still beautifully shiny and without signs of wear. You have no doubt about it, but also the controls, the carpets, the steering wheel and of course the Jaeger instruments look and function as they should.
Under the huge hood is the well-known and reliable 6,750 cc V8. A hell of an engine with more than 200 hp. Do not immediately expect super sports car performance, the 5.20 meter long convertible has a weight of about 2,300 kilograms, so there are some kilos to carry. However, the flexibility is unprecedented, hardly any engine runs as silky smooth as that of a Rolls-Royce from the 1980s. The torque of around 540 Nm, which is already available at low revs, provides an abundance of power in every gear. The engine of this particular Corniche runs beautifully, as it should. We have had the necessary Corniche's and Silver Shadows in our collection in recent years and this one is noticeably fresh and technically 'up to date'.
