Introduced in 1985, the turbocharged version of the Porsche 944 represented a welcome improvement to an already much admired model. The 944 was the third of Porsche's family of front-engined sports cars and had been launched in normally aspirated form in 1981; it was closely related to the first of the line - the 924 – and constructed along similar lines. Beneath the bodywork (50mm wider than the 924's) was a 2.5-litre, 163bhp overhead-camshaft 'four' - in effect half of the 928's V8 bored out - fitted with twin balancer shafts. The rear transaxle - a five-speed unit this time - was retained, while the 924-type running gear was suitably up-rated to cope with the 944's superior performance.

In appearance the Turbo did not look that different from the original 944, Porsche limiting the styling revisions to a new front end and flush-fitting windscreen, changes which, together with a rear under-tray, brought about improved aerodynamics. The engine was strengthened to cope with the extra power generated by the KKK turbocharger and produced 220bhp – some 35% more than the un-blown unit – which was good enough for a top speed of over 150mph (241km/h), matching the performance of the 3.2-litre 911 Carrera. Appropriate upgrades were made to the gearbox, differential, suspension, wheels and brakes while power-assisted steering and the 928-type instrumentation were standardised. 944 Turbo production ceased in 1991, by which time around 51,000 had been made.

Dévoilée en 1985, la version turbo de la Porsche 944 représentait une amélioration bienvenue d'un modèle déjà très apprécié. La 944 était la troisième de la famille des Porsche à moteur avant qui avait été lancée sous forme atmosphérique en 1981. Elle s'apparentait clairement à la première de la série, la 924 – et reprenait les mêmes lignes. Sous la carrosserie (50 mm plus large que celle de la 924), on trouvait un quatre cylindres à arbre à cames en tête 2,5 litre de 163 ch - en fait la moitié du V8 de la 928 – doté de deux arbres d'équilibrage. Le système transaxle – cette fois une boîte à cinq rapports – était conservé, tandis que le train roulant de la 924 était remanié pour s'adapter au surcroit de puissance de la 944.

En apparence, la Turbo ne semblait pas très différente de la 944 originale, Porsche ayant limité les remaniements stylistiques à un avant modifié et un pare-brise affleurant, des changements qui, combinés à un sous-plancher arrière, donnaient une meilleure aérodynamique. Le moteur avait été renforcé pour encaisser la puissance générée par le turbocompresseur KKK et développait 220 ch – 35% de plus que la version atmosphérique – capables de l'emmener à une vitesse maximale de plus de 150 mph (241 km/h), équivalant les performances de la 911 Carrera 3,2 litres. Des modifications avaient été apportées à la boîte de vitesses, au différentiel, à la suspension, aux roues et aux freins, tandis que la direction assistée et une instrumentation type 928 étaient installées en série. La production de la 944 Turbo prit fin en 1991, alors qu'il en avait été construit 51 000 exemplaires.

Cette Porsche 944 Turbo modèle 1990, a été livrée neuve le 18 novembre 1991 par les établissements Porsche Coll de Perpignan à Manuel Ferrer.
