There is one car that should not be absent from the list of American icons like Mustang and Corvette and that is the Ford Thunderbird. The first 1955 generation stands for the 50’s like nothing else: excessive, Rock&Roll and long live the fun. 1961 sees the third generation and is totally distinct from its two predecessors. The striking bodywork has the streamlined shape of a rocket with taillights reminiscent of jet afterburners.
The Thunderbird we have on offer is one we cant get enough of. Admiring it is a feast, sitting in it the same and driving it is the very best feeling ever. The king of the road feeling you get with this Thunderbird, its large red steering wheel, awesome clockwork array and view over the expansive bonnet is tremendous.
This 1962 Convertible was assembled in Wixom (Michigan) ready to be delivered to its first lucky owner. This owner fell for the 390 V8, the esteemed 6,4 litre Big Block. A good 300 hp attached to a 3-speed automatic Cruise-O Matic MX transmission ensures a truly iconic American sportscar experience: a torque rich eight-cylinder that does its work in anything but silence, handling purely attributable to a ‘60’s American and of course the combination of enormous size that you do not quite find back in practicable space. This red Thunderbird also has the popular Sport Roadster tonneau relegating the rear bench to storage space. If on the other hand you want to share the trip with family and friends: no worry, the cover is easily removed revealing the rear bench.
The Thunderbird’s bodywork is very original. At some stage in the distant past the car was resprayed, long enough for it to have bedded in nicely. The fact the respray happened in the past does not mean the car is showing its age, no sir, there is no rust or obvious damage and every detail is beautiful. The average classic can sports a few strips of brightwork, a grill and small bumpers, this American’s front is almost completely made up of gleaming material. The chrome rear bumper, occupying a significant part of the rear, is also very neat.
The interior’s condition is exactly how we like to see it; original and fully intact. The dashboard with its three large round gauges seated in deep sleeves is in peak shape including the abundant aluminium. The upholstery shows it has been used but has remained free from tears, filth and other undesirable issues. The supple seats are tremendously comfortable. The driver’s chair is electrically adjustable, the side windows are automatically operated. A nice detail is the presence of the original radio. We can promise you that once behind the wheel you will not want to leave!
Mechanically this Thunderbird is exceptionally sound. The juicy V8 runs a treat and is very responsive. Push the right pedal to the floor and you are rewarded with a fierce shove in the back. Do not forget the Thunderbird manages to sprint to 100 km/hr in a lot less than 10 counts. Today nobody will be trebling at the knees at that, but back then they were serious figures. The rest of the moving parts are just as impressive as the engine and transmission. Brakes, suspension and steering give a fine and safe feeling. The feeling does not disappear on inspecting underneath the car, all is very tidy and sound.
The thunderbird has the necessary documentation, photos and lovely 1962 Ford yearbook. The latter intended for internal use containing a description of all models, including the Thunderbird with every original optional extra, colour and specifications.
In short: A car that not only is impressive cosmetically but also convinces when it comes to driving pleasure.
Interested in a Thunderbird? We are sure this exceptionally original car will not disappoint.
