Rare specifications
In December 1982, the venerable German firm Mercedes presented the 190, the first "small" car in its range since the 1940s, when it had previously only occupied the very top end of the market. With its 4.42 m length and four doors, the baby benz is far from being a small car! On the contrary, it is part of the bourgeois family three-box saloon segment, and competes directly with the Bavarian manufacturer BMW on its own territory. Unlike the BMW E30, the great rival which benefits from powerful 6-cylinders, the W201 is satisfied at the beginning with the 4-cylinder 2 l M102, in its carburettor version of 90 hp, or injection of 122 hp (190 E) which enables it to flirt with 200 km/h. In 1985, a 166 hp 6-cylinder engine appeared under the bonnet to compete head-on with BMW's 3 series. But we have to go back to 1983 to find the real bomb of the star brand, with the presentation of the aggressive 2.3-16, which offers thanks to its 4-cylinder revised by Cosworth 185 welcome hp, with a look to match (spoiler, trunk spoiler, side skirts and fender wideners), to compete in the German DTM championship. In 1985, the "big" 2.5-16 with 195 hp responded to the BMW offensive, which had just made the first M3 official.
The 2.3-16 was produced in 19,487 units, while only 5,743 units of the 2.5-16 were produced. It is one of these rare 2.5s that we are offering for sale today. Sold new in Switzerland, this Almandinrot (almond red) metallic car also has interesting options such as a sunroof and electric windows. With less than 184,500 original kilometres, the car was regularly serviced until 2008, when it had 169,000 kilometers, as evidenced by the service booklet and the various documents that accompany it (including the identification sheet with the options). The current owner bought it in 2014, and has only driven it a few miles since then. The clutch transceiver has just been changed.
This car will be sold by auction by AGUTTES Auction House, in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, on June the 20th, 2021.
