The French have been producing small, stark, light cars since as early as 1906, and had become recognised as the market leaders in their manufacture by the outbreak of the First World War. The 1920s saw a vast number of light cars produced, many by back street entrepreneurs, largely concentrated in the suburbs of Paris. The best and most popular of this flowering breed of light car was the Amilcar.
