Beschreibung
Chassis No. 113229
Engine No. 113229
The Mercedes-Benz 290 (W18) was introduced in February 1933 at the International Motor and Motorcycle Show in Berlin. It was one of three new swing-axle models launched by Daimler-Benz as part of a broader effort to modernize its entire vehicle lineup. The 290 featured the new rear suspension with two coil springs on each side, a design like that used in the entry level 200 model, however, it included a compensating spring behind the differential for improved stability.
The front suspension was a blend of two different approaches, reflecting a transitional period in Daimler-Benz's design philosophy. It combined a lower transverse leaf spring-used in the earlier 170 model-with an upper suspension arm that pressed against a coil spring mounted inside the body. This unique and patented design remained in use until 1937. Powering the 290 was the M18 engine, a 2.9-liter inline-six developed from the 2.6-liter engine in the Stuttgart 260. With a slightly larger bore, it initially produced 60 horsepower, which was increased to 68 horsepower in 1935 through a higher compression ratio. The engine was paired with an overdrive transmission, offering direct drive in third gear and a vacuum-operated overdrive for enhanced cruising efficiency.
This particular 290 Roadster was restored under prior ownership approximately 11 years ago. Images from the restoration and its current condition reveal that the short wheelbase chassis received a complete and comprehensive restoration, with the bodywork stripped to the bare wood framework. The bodywork was expertly restored in a vibrant shade of red. The two-seater's interior was reupholstered with full tan leather and a luxurious opal instrument cluster set with VDO gauges. The wire wheels were restored with brightly finished spokes and rims with color-matched hubcaps. The bright trim throughout the car was restored to a high standard, including the bumpers, grille, headlights, center-mounted fog light, and dual driving lights mounted next to the windshield. The two-piece custom-made matching luggage set is a very fitting final flourish to the exacting restoration project. Following the restoration, the car was acquired by the current owner in 2016 and remains in superb condition today.
With bodywork evocative of the fabulous 540 K Roadsters, this incredible 290 Roadster offers the opportunity to participate in countless events worldwide. From tours and rallies to showings at exclusive concours d'elegance, this sporting Roadster is sure to be welcomed with open arms at a near-endless variety of classic automotive events.
