At the pinnacle of the Mercedes-Benz model hierarchy in the 1990s were the V12 600s, with the most commanding of these models being the long-wheelbase S 600 sedan. The 6.0-liter V12 engine, Mercedes-Benz's first twelve-cylinder for a production passenger car, was the most powerful engine of its time, featuring advanced technologies like four-valve technology, a variable intake camshaft, and cylinder-selective anti-knock control. The engine's management system communicated through a shared data channel, enabling features like rapid catalytic converter warm-up, acceleration skid control, and friction torque control for stability on slippery surfaces. Alongside these innovations, the suspension was a key focus, with a newly developed double-wishbone front axle and a revised multi-link rear suspension designed for superior comfort, handling, and safety.
For those wanting even more, AMG was ready with a compelling list of enhancements on offer. Chief among these upgrades included increasing the 6.0-liter M120's displacement to 7.2-liters, an incredibly rare and powerful upgrade that features in the example on offer. Beginning life as a long wheelbase S 600 finished in Blue Black Metallic (199), AMG began their upgrades in November 1994. This work included replacing its original 6.0-liter V12 with the upgraded 7.2-liter unit, rated at 525 horsepower. The engine's performance was so compelling the V12 was famously chosen by Pagani for their era-defining Zonda supercar. Additionally, this car was upgraded with an AMG exhaust system, AMG Aero II wheels, and a 300 kph speedometer. This is on top of the rarely seen, factory-installed four-place seating package, xenon headlights, multi-contour front seats, and power rear window shade.
Inspected, physically verified, and researched in the Affalterbach archives by AMG Classic and MKB Manufaktur for its AMG Classic Conversion Certificate, the car is additionally documented by a copy of its AMG certification letter from new. Today this world-class businessman's sedan that means business is offered with just over 115,000 kilometers or the equivalent of 72,000 miles and remains in splendid condition. Upon debut, S 72 AMG represented the ultimate iteration of the S-Class with a high-performance V12, executive performance road manners, and rarity-it still does today.
