The XJ was introduced in 1968 as Jaguar sought to consolidate its contemporary saloon portfolio. From 1970, the XJ became the marque’s flagship four-door car and the earliest version of the saloon—later known as the Series I—would be the final Big Cat design overseen by company founder, Sir William Lyons. The Series 2 launched in 1973, from which the XJ Coupé was born. The svelte, two-door interpretation of the XJ was based on the model’s short wheelbase platform and featured a pillarless hardtop body topped by a black vinyl roof. The stylish sports car could be equipped with either a 4.2-litre inline-six or a thundering 5.3-litre V-12.

The left-hand-drive example offered here was built for the Swiss market and left Jaguar’s Coventry factory on 14 March 1977. Specified with an automatic transmission in Carriage Brown over a Biscuit leather interior, the Jaguar retains this configuration to this day. The car is accompanied by a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust (JDHT) certificate that verifies this XJ Coupé’s matching-numbers chassis and engine. The car has been retained in Belgium by The Curated Collection since September 2014, and presents as a wonderful Jaguar from the period.
