The simplicity of the Citroën 2CV’s fundamental design is refreshingly straightforward. Conceived by the French marque in 1948 as a means of affordably mobilising a segment of rural society still dependent on the horse and cart, the 2CV’s name translates roughly from the French deux chevaux to “two horse-powers”. The 2CV was built to be cheap, reliable, easy to maintain, and with long-travel suspension to handle rough terrain both on farmland and on poorly maintained roads.
Today, the earliest examples of the 2CV are coveted by enthusiasts and marque collectors alike. The Citroën offered here features the charming period features of an older “Tin Snail”, specifically its ribbed bonnet cover, canvas roof, and rear-hinged front doors. The 2CV wears indicator side-repeaters behind its rear doors and a metal boot cover that allows for easier access to the luggage compartment compared to the alternative soft-top that reached down to the taillights. The car is powered by a 425-cc “AZ”-series air-cooled engine.
The 2CV was registered new in Belgium to Andre Verstraete of the Woluwe-Saint-Lambert region of Brussels. The car is offered with its period Belgian registration. Between then and when the Citroën joined The Curated Collection in November 2015, the car’s history is not documented, while at some point it has been restored. Now presented as a charming 2CV, collectors should not miss the opportunity to acquire this piece of French automotive history.
