A Touring body style added a dose to practicality to the underpinnings of the dynamic and desirable 2002 saloon. However, BMW was keen to avoid 1971’s new model from being unfairly rendered as little more than a utility vehicle. As a result, it was with this variant that the sporting “tii” debuted. Featuring a Kugelfischer fuel injection system, the famed, 1,990-cc “M10” four-cylinder engine delivered an impressive 128 horsepower.
Per the accompanying Birth Certificate supplied by BMW Classic, this early 2000 tii Touring was specified in the striking shade of Golf yellow and delivered on 2 August 1971 to the Hergenhan KG dealer of Alsdorf, Germany. Later registered in Würselen, the car was acquired by The Curated Collection in Belgium in December 2015.
Presented today in its factory-correct exterior colour, this example is equipped with rare Recaro seats and 13-inch FPS wheels, as seen on cars configured with the “Sport Paket”. The Touring benefits from restoration work and a repaint in February 2020 performed by Carrosserie Janssens, based to the south of Brussels. Invoices (available to view on file) record work that totalled some €105,522. The car is also complemented by its owner’s guides.
