Beschreibung

Chassis No. 5043268

Engine No. 9439227

Without straying far from its simple, utilitarian origins-a rear mounted, air-cooled engine mated directly to the transaxle, a 94.5-inch wheelbase, and independent front, swing axle rear suspension-Volkswagen attempted to broaden the Beetle's appeal in 1948 by tipping Karmann to build four-seater Cabriolets, and Hebmüller to build two-seater Cabriolets. The latter ceased production in 1953, while Karmann would go on to build a peak of just under 20,000 Cabriolets in 1979, thanks in large part to the model gaining traction in the United States market. Even as the Rabbit/Golf assumed the Beetle's practical mantle, Beetle Convertible sales flourished while demand for the sedan waned-a testament to the model's strong nostalgic appeal.

This charming Convertible was completed on 29 October 1962 and dispatched to San Francisco on 6 November, finished in Gulf Blue and equipped with white wall tires, Silver Beige leatherette upholstery, and a Silver Grey soft top. Presented today in its original color scheme, this West Coast car benefits from a comprehensive restoration under previous ownership. Notable features include attractive chrome brightwork, a checked vinyl convertible top, body-color wheels mounted with Coker Classic whitewall tires, a Bendix radio, and proper six-volt electrics. Accompanying this compelling early example is a boot cover, full-size spare, and a coveted VW-branded accessory Hazet toolkit with tools. With fewer than 500 miles traveled during its decade in the Academy of Art University Collection, this early Beetle presents in exceptionally preserved condition with nicely restored finishes, charming period details, and attractive Sea Blue over ivory livery-a fine example ripe for enjoyment.
