The 'RS' badge is well renowned in the world of fast Ford enthusiasts. Originating from Ford's Motorsport division in the 1960s, the RS actually stood for 'Rallye Sport', and meant that any Ford model special enough to bear its namesake had been designed specifically for rally racing. Due to Ford's repeated successes in rallying during this era, the RS badge very quickly became synonymous with Motorsport and Performance. The Sierra RS Cosworth was developed as a result of a partnership between Ford and race engine designers Cosworth. The purpose of the project was to create a homologated vehicle to win European Group A racing championships. The engine was to be a 16V, twin-cam based upon Ford's existing T88 block (commonly known as the Pinto engine). The aim was to develop a turbo-charged unit that would be capable of 300bhp in race trim. Cosworth accepted the task but only on the basis that Ford agreed to purchase 15,000 units of these engines. From there, the road legal and racing engine legend the Sierra RS Cosworth was born.
This is an early and very desirable rear wheel drive Sapphire RS Cosworth, beautifully presented in the rarest colour, Crystal Blue. This very eye catching colour was only available for the first eight months of production and makes a very nice change from the more commonly seen white or black examples. The car has been through pretty much a total restoration over the past six years, virtually everything has been restored or rebuilt and it now presents in excellent condition throughout. The car has formed part of our vendors Ford collection and has been something of a labour of love for him, but as is often the case, space requirements mean that a few cars must leave, to make way for new arrivals. One small missing piece of the puzzle of the radio, it has proven quite difficult for our vendor to source an OEM unit, and he didn't want to cheapen the work he had done by fitting an aftermarket unit, so this will be a job for the next custodian. The car is supplied with a V5C registration document and will be presented for an MoT prior to the sale. This is certainly a Sapphire which would be right at home in any fast Ford collection.
