The Jaguar MK. IV was a re-launch of a pre-Second World War model made by SS Cars Ltd. from 1936. Before the war, the name Jaguar was the model name given to the complete range of cars built by SS Cars Ltd. The saloons were titled SS Jaguar 1½ litre, 2½ litre or 3½ litre. After the war, the company name was changed to Jaguar Cars Ltd. All the cars were built on a separate chassis frame with suspension by semi-elliptic leaf springs on the front and rear. Pre-war, the car was available as a saloon or drophead coupe, although post war only the saloon was produced. Prior to 1938, body construction on all the models was by the traditional steel on wood method but in that year it changed to all steel. The cabin dimensions and well-appointed interior were very similar to its larger-engined brothers.
This Jaguar was originally supplied by Richies Garage, Glasgow in November 1939. It was purchased by the current vendor in 2019, he has had significant amounts of work done on the car, improving performance and reliability. In 2020 the car was completely rewired, a CD is available showing the extent of the work. The auto electrician very sensibly has supplied an additional wiring diagram showing the position of relays etc. The trafficators and side lights flash in sequence and the wiper motor has been rebuilt. An electric fuel pump has been fitted for additional reliability. In 2022 the head gasket was replaced and the manual four-speed gearbox was rebuilt. In 2023 the bottom of the doors were restored and the boot was re-upholstered, with photographic evidence available. The 1701cc engine runs very well and we are advised this Jaguar SS (1½ Litre) drives with no known faults. The black and grey paintwork is in good order as is the chromework. The interior is original with a delightful patina which adds to the charm of this delightful Jaguar. Supplied with a V5C registration document and a collection of invoices, together with an original instruction book and a workshop manual. This very well cared for 85 year old vehicle exudes charm and character in abundance. Consigned by Stewart Banks.
