Beschreibung

Porsche, Rennsport, Leichtbau
These three German words briefly describe what this Porsche 964 3.6 Carrera RS is all about. Actually, it should also say ‘unique’, but the car enthusiast in you probably already thought of that. The how and why of the origins of the RS is described in detail in our ‘history’ column, so we will not go into that further here.

The fact is that the RS represents the pinnacle of Porsche models. Relatively light in weight, low profiled in terms of options, more than sufficient engine power (on paper the 260 hp does not seem like much, but in practice it beats most competitors with more power) but above all the unparalleled, incomparable road holding. If you’ve never seen it, look up some videos of the Carrera Cup to really see what this car is capable of. Of course you don’t have to do that, and certainly not with such a beautiful original copy as the one we now offer, but it is nice that it is possible.

This Carrera RS was originally delivered on March 7, 1992 by the German dealer in Mannheim. The car stayed in Germany until July 2007 and was then purchased by the only Dutch owner so far. A true Porsche enthusiast who, even if a roll bar and 6-point seat belts suggest otherwise, did not use it as a race car. Very nice, but the car has now become a bit too pricey for that. The roll bar and belts look beautiful in the eyes of the owner and he left them in place for safety reasons. But these can be dismantled very quickly for someone who does not wish to do so. The same applies to the steering wheel, because the original RS leather steering wheel also belongs to the car. What is also included are of course all booklets delivered from new. This also shows that the car has been fully dealer/specialist maintained and no services have been skipped, despite the very low mileage of only 65.999 km. It goes without saying that the originality also continues in the matching numbers, especially with this type of Porsche. This means that all components are present as the car left the factory.

After many months of thinking about whether he wanted to say goodbye to his beloved 964 Carrera RS after 17 years of enjoying it, the decision was made. Partly due to long stays abroad, where the car cannot be taken, the decision became somewhat easier. It was also supplemented by the fact that he will not be completely without a Porsche, because we were previously able to supply him a beautiful 911 SWB. Let’s just say that the suffering is still manageable. This decision might allow you to make this RS yours. Imagine how it would be to park this car into your garage… And then have the opportunity to regularly experience what real Porsche driving entails. To feel the sensation that many drivers felt before you, all of whom were ‘captivated’ by so much potential and character. We now know that feeling, and it is impossible to put it on paper. You really have to get behind the wheel yourself to experience what an RS is all about. We would be happy to make a sensational appointment with you.

HISTORY
If you ignore the extremely rare 911 Carrera RS 3.0, it took Porsche almost twenty years to present a new Carrera RS. Naturally, the origins of the new RS can be traced back to motorsport. For the 1990 season, Porsche introduced a new Cup Car to replace the Porsche 944 Turbo Cup. The Porsche Carrera Cup was born. The new cup car was built on the basis of the Porsche 964: rear-wheel drive, 3.6 liter six-cylinder engine with 265 hp, 1,125 kg and ABS.

The new format was an immediate success and Porsche customers also wanted to experience the cup car feeling on the road.
For that reason, Porsche decided to reintroduce the two letters, which are intended for business purposes, and presented the new Porsche 964 Carrera RS at the Geneva Motor Show in 1991. At first glance, it doesn’t look all that different from a basic model of Carrera. On the outside, there was only one unique styling element for the RS: the magnesium wheels. But on the inside things got serious: bucket seats, belts instead of door handles, no back seat, no air conditioning, there wasn’t even a radio. Another victim of Porsche’s weight savings was the power steering.
Porsche turned the 964 Carrera RS into a dynamic masterpiece without complex technology or extreme engine power. The highest maxim was weight reduction – quite conventional. In doing so, Porsche created a driving experience that is incomparable. And its appeal is even more apparent today than it was in 1991.

In true Porsche fashion, Zuffenhausen engineers took the subject of ‘Leichtbau’ or ‘weight saving’ very seriously. The flywheel alone was seven kilograms lighter, which led to an engine that revs happily and quickly. The 3.6 liter six-cylinder boxer engine received a ten hp boost thanks to some adjustments in the Motronic system. In combination with the shortened ratios in the higher gears of the G50/10 gearbox, the Porsche 964 Carrera RS is not a super car, but it is one that managed to bring driving pleasure to very great heights. In addition, original cup brakes were installed at the front and rear of the Turbo, because anyone who wants to drive fast also wants to be able to brake hard.

With its quite hard suspension, the Porsche 964 Carrera RS is certainly not a grand tourer. It’s more of a raw driving machine for special occasions. Because there is virtually no sound insulation, the 6-cylinder boxer sound hits the driver’s eardrums almost unfiltered. For 1991, the grip the car produces was tremendous, and even today you can scare the hell out of your passenger. Especially with modern tires, the Porsche 964 Carrera RS is still capable of astonishing cornering speeds. However, given the very low weight, no less than 130 kilograms less than a Porsche 964 Carrera 2 (1,220 kg in total), this should not be a surprise.

The 964 RS is a 911, which is not immediately accessible to everyone. Anyone who compares this car with, for example, a 964 Turbo or 993 Carrera is doing the Porsche 964 Carrera RS an injustice. It’s not about pure performance or lap times. No, it’s all about the excitement and the experience of the car. In short, it’s about the character of the car: light, unfiltered and virtually without driving aids. The ability to go through the gears up to the red line offers driving pleasure in its purest form.

It is clear that such a car will never be everyone’s favorite. Yet almost 2.300 copies were sold. Often in bright colors such as Maritime Blue, Ruby Red or Mint Green. Another popular color was Grand Prix White. Of course, the Porsche 964 Carrera RS is no bargain. In times of many debates about global warming, climate politics and the often predicted end of the combustion engine, the 964 RS is a great opportunity. A chance to escape all these unspeakable and certainly not conducive debates and enjoy a Porsche, which was not intended to be just any car. It was designed to be the most exciting 911 in its range and has every right to wear the legendary RS badge.

Porsche Rennsport, Leichtbau
