Designed by Giovanni Michelotti, famed for the creation of many Italian exotics including Ferrari's and Maserati's. The styling of the car was met with great reviews. Triumph decided to revisit the GT4 idea and in replacing the under-powered Spitfire 4 engine with the more powerful Triumph Vitesse two-litre, six-cylinder engine, the GT6 was born and production of the Mk. I GT6 commenced in July 1966. During the course of the next four years, the GT6 received a number of styling changes and mechanical developments, dramatically improving the handling and in October 1970 the GT6 Mk. III was introduced with a total of 13,042 units being built before the end of production in December 1973.

The example we have here is an original home market example, which was first registered in January 1972 but built in October 1971. The car was fitted with the desirable factory overdrive and also features a full length Webasto sunroof. This GT6 has been the subject of an extensive restoration, which was completed in November 2023 and presents in excellent order today. We know that the car underwent some restoration in the early 1980's, as well as a further respray sometime in the 1990's. A mechanic purchased the car in 2003 and quickly set about a thorough mechanical overhaul, as well as attending to some structural work, many photos of the work are included in the history file.

In more recent years, the bodywork has received a great deal of attention, with a full colour change back to its original white colour and a vast amount of metal work carried out. An interior restoration has also been carried out, with a full re-upholster, new headlining, new sunroof, door cards, carpets, a new dashboard and wood trim. This GT6 is supplied to auction with a V5C registration document, MoT test certificate, comprehensive history file, USB stick containing many photos of the restoration works and British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate.
