The first 911 arrived in the US in 1965, offering agile performance at a modest price. Though already a remarkable offering for the times, Porsche developed ongoing enhancements each year as the car evolved from the original offering. Certainly all 911 series cars were quite powerful and formidable on the road, but since these were first released, the original 911 has become a rare and highly desirable car particularly in the earliest iterations, a fact that continues to attract new generations of enthusiasts today.History of This CarAccording to the Porsche CoA accompanying this car, this numbers matching Porsche 911 was completed on April 28, 1965. Finished in Light Ivory with Blue Leatherette interior, it was optioned with the following features. - Webasto Heater- Dunlop Tires (165/15)Although early ownership history is not known at this time, the car survived as a complete and running example in sound overall condition with no accident damage and no structural rust, making it an ideal candidate for a comprehensive restoration. In 2015, the car was delivered to Porsche restoration experts at European Collectibles where it was restored over a period of 2 1/2 years and completed in 2018 to concours quality standards. While under restoration at European Collectibles, the car was carefully disassembled and stripped to bare metal and all systems tended to by specialists covering drivetrain, suspension, brakes, interior, body, and paint. The original matching numbers engine was rebuilt along with the correct matching numbers transmission. During the restoration, all glass was removed and new weatherstripping installed, all chrome was removed and triple plated, while the interior was beautifully reupholstered using authentic blue leatherette, correct carpet, correct headliner, properly finished dashboard, the original wood rim steering wheel, and all original instrumentation restored to perfection. The finished car has been driven approximately 1,200 miles, proving mechanical operation and refining details as needed. In 2018, with 18,360 miles, a set of points and condenser were purchased and in January 2024, the car was serviced at David Loop European including an oil, lube, and filter using Swepco motor and gear oil, brake fluid flush, new hood supports, new shift lever bushings, new Bosch ignition points, and new spark plugs.Condition OverviewToday this Porsche presents in stunning condition with excellent high gloss ivory white paint throughout the iconic 911 body. The door jambs and other inner body surfaces display paint finish consistent with the exterior gloss and detail. The rubber, weather stripping, and trim are all properly installed per factory standards. The front storage compartment and engine lid open and shut per factory standards, displaying consistent dimensions, fit, and crisp closure. The doors open and shut with excellent fit returning that distinctive Porsche “ping” evident in original factory cars. There are no major flaws to detract from the overall visual presentation. The rubber bumper trim and various plated parts are in excellent condition. With the exception of one driver’s side window, the correct Sigla branded windshield and Sekurit side and rear branded glass are in place. The chrome is excellent throughout from the door handles and side glass trim to the taillight trim. The lighting, rear lenses, and side view mirror are also in excellent condition. The engine grille and gold finished Porsche 911 emblems are subtle and correct for this era. The correct and original chrome plated steel wheels are very nicely presented with proper finish, 11/65 date coded stamps on the inner wheel surface, finished with polished hubcaps bearing the embossed Porsche crest. A set of Vredestein Sprint Classic 165 HR15 tires are appropriately sized, showing excellent tread. The beautifully restored interior is extremely pleasing with the correct blue leatherette material which matches the Porsche CoA. The front seats are trimmed with desirable Pepita Cloth Inserts, while the rear seats, door cards, and surrounding trim are finished in matching blue material. All stitched surfaces are correctly seamed, properly padded, and reflective of original specifications including the correctly finished dashboard. The instruments, dial faces, and needles are in excellent condition with contrasting black dials, correct color needles, and crisp iconic green numeric indication. The correct early series black horn and wood rim steering wheel is beautiful in every respect. A wood grained panel insert with 911 script and a radio blanking plate are reminders of the sparsely elegant performance focus of early Porsches. Correctly finished knobs, 5-speed floor shifter, and correct square weave carpet complete the interior. The engine compartment and matching numbers engine are both reflective of careful and accurate restoration depicting the 2.0 Liter 911 engine, Solex carburetors, distinctive air-cooling fan and shroud, and correct air cleaner assembly. The numbers matching engine has been mechanically restored with correct finishes, appropriate fittings and hardware, and original style components creating a very cohesive and accurate overall presentation. The front storage compartment features correct carpet liner, a 7/65 date coded factory chrome plated spare wheel with matching Vredestein Sport Classic tires, proper finishes, a correct single strike VIN stamping on the spare tire tub deck, matching chassis number on the aluminum chassis tag, a clean and correctly finished “smuggler’s compartment” and the correct components for the optional Webasto heating unit. A new battery was installed in 2023. The undercarriage is clean and consistent with high quality restoration efforts delivered to the entire car from top to bottom. The chassis features correct factory brakes with correct caliper castings, correct exhaust and muffler, and distinctive Porsche heat exchangers. The undercarriage, engine and gearbox casings, lines, and suspension details have been restored to the same high standards as the rest of the car with no notable damage to the metal floor stampings, further supporting the sound and unmodified original condition of this car when it was selected for restoration. The car starts quickly, revs responsively, and runs smoothly at idle with a pleasing exhaust note when blipping the throttle. On the road, this 911 performs with delightful ease, making great power while delivering excellent handling and spirited acceleration. The car pulls cleanly through the rev range without hesitation or excessive vibration. The motor is crisp with the Solex carburetors and Porsche exhaust delivering that iconic air-cooled sound. The 5-speed gearbox shifts smoothly warm or cold without bearing noise. The brakes pull down straight without rotor runout on a solid, high pedal with confident suspension. Pulling into a parking spot and shutting the car down, taking a moment to absorb the impressive combination of vintage performance coupled with restoration excellence, it’s easy to see how the original 911 continues to captivate new generations of enthusiasts.
