Originally an Austrian bicycle manufacturer, Steyr began producing automobiles and tractors in 1915 in order to diversify their business. To properly emerge in the crowded automotive industry of Europe at that time, Steyr enlisted engineer Hans Ledwinka to design an inline six-cylinder engine. Additionally, Ledwinka incorporated advanced equipment into the earliest Steyr automobiles, such as a conventional four-speed gearbox and multi-disc clutch.

Steyr developed the Type 45 in 1926, a time when they had hired Dr. Ferdinand Porsche away from Mercedes-Benz, but also just prior to the Great Depression, after which they would cease production of automobiles of their own design.

The earliest history of this Type 45 Landaulet is not known, however, it was stored in Malmerspach, France in the Schlumpf Reserve Collection for many years prior to the Mullin Collection’s acquisition in 2008. An interesting piece of Austrian automobile manufacturing history, this Steyr deserves your close consideration.
