Originality comes in many forms but very few exude its nature quite like this 1967 Volvo 1800 S. Built in Gothenburg, Sweden in March 1967, chassis number 183451023614 was optioned in Cherry Red (46) with an interior trimmed with Black leather seats and Black upholstery (308-501). Volvo's own records note engine, transmission and body numbers. As described in the ownership statement provided in the history file available for review, "the history of this 1967 Volvo 1800 is quite simple." Its original Indiana title, issued in 1967, shows that the original owner was one Harold L. Hartman of Elkhart, Indiana and records a purchase date of 8 June 1967. The statement relays that Hartman took delivery of the car at the U.S. Port of Entry and subsequently drove it back to Indiana – likely the longest trip it has since been on!
After arriving in Indiana, Hartman's aunt notes that he enjoyed his new 1800 S locally with a focus of preservation and originality. Naturally this is most reflected in the current condition of the car and the odometer reading that today shows just over 10,000 miles at the time of cataloging. After 45 years of careful preservation that shepherded the car into collectible status, perhaps most impressive is the interiohides. Its Smiths gauges are crystal clear, housed in a dashboard with its ornate-for-Sweden trim that remains in pristine conditionr. The seats with their original leather surfaces feature minimal wear and a warm glow not typically seen with replacement and retains its original Blaupunkt AM/FM radio. Perhaps especially fitting for the brand so focused on safety are the pair of original Feb. 1967 date-marked seat belts. The exterior is exemplary as well retaining its factory fit brightwork, Volvo marked glass, and even the original Pirelli Cinturato 165 SR15 tires mounted on grey painted steel wheels. Furthermore, its toolkit, jack, and covered spare are included in the sale.
Since acquisition by the Academy of Art University Collection in 2015, this time capsule example has been featured as part of AAU's design booth display at the San Marino Motor Classic concours. It accrued a scant 189 miles in that time, yet according to those well versed in the collection it drives and operates well, just as expected from those who engineered and built these exceptionally attractive yet stout sporting tourers nearly 60 years ago.
