Au début des années 1950, alors que le Japon se relève tout juste de la Seconde Guerre mondiale et de sa défaite, la marque Toyota s’attaque à un nouveau segment. Elle a déjà construit quelques milliers de voitures (Toyota A1) avant la guerre, mais c’est désormais sur un véhicule tout-terrain qu’elle jette son dévolu, en copiant outrageusement la Jeep américaine. En juillet 1951 deux « jeep » Toyota gravissent ainsi le Mont Fuji devant des journalistes ébahis. Le Toyota J est né ! De 1955 à 1960, la marque japonaise fait évoluer son désormais légendaire Land Cruiser avec les séries 2 et 3. Pour la nouvelle décennie, le dessin du mythique franchisseur s’affine et s’embourgeoise pour s’adresser désormais au grand public, et plus seulement aux militaires et aux professionnels. La série 4, qui bénéficie par ailleurs de toute l’expérience acquise depuis les années 1950, va lancer Toyota au niveau des plus grands constructeurs du monde. De 1960 à 1984, 1 500 000 Land Cruiser série 4 seront ainsi commercialisés sur toute la planète. C’est même le premier véhicule japonais construit à l’étranger, dans l’usine Ford brésilienne. L’offre est étendue avec trois longueurs de châssis, plusieurs variantes de carrosserie (wagon, pick-up ou camionnette) et une multitude de motorisations successives, en essence (FJ) ou diesel (BJ).

Le Land Cruiser que nous présentons est un BJ 43 de 1978, qui dispose de l’emblématique moteur 4-cylindres Diesel de 3 l de cylindrée apparu en 1974. Sa carrosserie a été entièrement restaurée en 2019. Pour cela, la caisse a été démontée puis décapée avant de bénéficier d’un traitement cataphorèse. Il a ensuite reçu une peinture gris anthracite et des phares à led, un kit suspension Plus O.M.E. ainsi que des jantes triangular et des pneus BF Goodrich Mud-Terrain. Sa sellerie a également été restaurée et plus récemment une direction assistée électrique a été installée. Mécaniquement, notre BJ43 fonctionne très bien, son essai routier nous a d’ailleurs donné entière satisfaction. Avec son look ravageur ce baroudeur mythique est aujourd’hui prêt à arpenter tout type de terrain.

At the beginning of the 1950's, as Japan was just recovering from the Second World War and its defeat, the Toyota brand started a new segment. It had already built a few thousand cars (Toyota A1) before the war, but now set its sights on an all-terrain vehicle, outrageously copying the American Jeep. In July 1951, two Toyota "Jeeps" climbed Mount Fuji in front of baffled journalists. The Toyota J was born! From 1955 to 1960, the Japanese brand developed its now legendary Land Cruiser with the Series 2 and 3. For the new decade, the design of the mythical cross-country vehicle is refined and gentler to address the general public, and not only the military and professionals. The 4th series, which also benefits from all the experience acquired since the 1950s, will launch Toyota to the level of the largest manufacturers in the world. From 1960 to 1984, 1,500,000 Land Cruiser Series 4 were sold all over the world. It is even the first Japanese vehicle built abroad, in the Brazilian Ford factory. The offer is extensive with three chassis lengths, several body variants (wagon, pick-up or truck) and a multitude of successive engines, gasoline (FJ) or diesel (BJ).

The Land Cruiser we present is a BJ 43 from 1978, which has the emblematic 3000cc 4-cylinder diesel engine that appeared in 1974. Its body was completely restored in 2019. For this, the body was dismantled and then stripped before receiving a cataphoresis treatment. It then received a charcoal gray paint and led headlights, a Plus O.M.E. suspension kit as well as triangular rims and BF Goodrich Mud-Terrain tires. Its upholstery has also been restored and more recently an electric power steering has been installed. Mechanically, our BJ43 works very well, and we were completely satisfied with its road test. With its devastating look, this mythical offroad going vehicle is now ready to tackle any type of terrain.
