When the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow was released to the public in October 1965, the development departments were showing the result of work carried out over a period of some ten years. The new models were technically striking in three ways. A monocoque chassis was used; all wheels were sprung independently, and four-wheel disc brakes now ensured stopping power of the sort that had come to be expected in a modern car. Under the bonnet, the V8 engine, which had been introduced in the Silver Cloud series, was employed. In February 1977, the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow II was introduced. The most notable changes mechanically were rack and pinion steering and modifications to the front suspension which improved handling remarkably.

This stunning Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow II was purchased in 1978 by Mr D. Rayner in Sheffield and was kept fully maintained by him and the following owners with the service book stamped up to 1989. Purchased by the current owner in 1992 when the car had covered approximately 47,000 miles. He has used it sparingly until putting the car into storage in 2017. This Silver Shadow was taken out of storage in June this year by marque specialists Thompsons Garage who set about fully recommissioning it. This included replacing the fuel pumps, fitting new fuel hoses where necessary, cleaning the fuel system and fitting new spark plugs, stripping down the brake callipers and checking the brakes are functioning. Fitting a new battery and sourcing and fitting a good second-hand air conditioning pump, replacing the drive belts and alternator belt and re-gas the air conditioning system, all at a cost of around £7,000. This lovely Shadow II is in its original colour combination of sand over bronze with brown Connolly hide piped in cream and tan carpets and is supplied with a V5 registration document, an MoT test certificate which expires in November 2025, the original handbook pack and copies of the invoices for the work carried out this year. This is a stunning example of what is a very useable classic Rolls-Royce. Consigned by John Tomlin
