About this Collectable
The Renault Alpine V6 Turbo is the exclusive French alternative to the Porsche 911. This black example is the non-catalytic converter version with 200 hp and was owned by the current owner for 22 years. Obviously including the original car radio, one of the fanciest 80s car radios ever fitted.
France is a great car country, but has produced relatively few sports car brands. There is Bugatti, of course, but they are out of reach for mere mortals. Fortunately, there is Alpine, which has been back on its feet since 2017. The new A110 put the brand back on the map with a bang. A lightweight mid-engined sports car that got nothing but rave reviews.
Going back in history, we start with the original Alpine A110 from 1963, which was succeeded in 1971 by the A310 that took Alpine to the next level. Initially fitted with a four-cylinder, but later the A310 was also offered with a V6.
In the 1980s, Alpine introduced its Porsche 911 competitor, the GTA (Grand Tourisme Alpine). Which is certainly not a far-fetched comparison. It is, after all, a 2+2 with a six-cylinder in the back. Only this time not a boxer engine, but a V-shaped one. There was a non-turbocharged version (the V6 GT with 160 hp) and a turbocharged version (with 200 hp).
This particular Alpine is a V6 Turbo from the pre-catalyst era, so still with the full 200 (instead of 185) hp. And thus the most powerful version of this model.
With its polyester body, the Alpine V6 Turbo is a pretty light car. Moreover, it is a remarkably streamlined model. In fact, in the 1980s it was one of the most aerodynamic cars on the market. The V6 GT had a Cw value of 0.28. The Turbo is slightly less aerodynamic, but 0.30 is still impressive. This allows a top speed of 243 km/h.
With its angular 1980s shape, the Alpine V6 Turbo is also a pretty spectacular car to look at. On the one hand, a timeless design, but at the same time with typical 80s features. Just look at the rims, the stickers but especially the interior. Despite its sporty looks, the Alpine V6 Turbo is above all a GT that is great for making long journeys. Air conditioning switched on, fiddling with the equaliser and a high-pitched turbo whistle.
This black example has been owned by its current Dutch owner for 22 years, who is now replacing it with a classic A110. It has just under 120,000 km on the odometer.
Our opinion
One of the finest, most iconic 1980s car radios with a V6 Turbo rear-wheel-drive Gran Turismo built around it. The angular exterior, recurring in the interior. Those amazing seats. If there had been a French version of Miami Vice, Sonny (Johnny) would have driven this Alpine. You can't get much more retro than this, and at the same time it is modern enough to actually enjoy it.
Turbo whistle in your ears and it will steal the show at any car event. An almost forgotten French sports car, since finding one is almost impossible. This or a Porsche 996? If you really want to drive something special, then of course it should be this black symbol of French quirkiness.
