Beschreibung
The Renault 5 was introduced in January 1972 as an all-new entry-level offering from the French automaker. Styled by Michel Boué, the model was offered in two generations spanning from 1972–1983 and 1984–1996. The Renault 5 Turbo is easily the most desirable of the many 5 models built, which was initially introduced in 1980 to meet homologation requirements for international rallying. Styled by Bertone, the mechanical specifications were markedly different from the standard 5, with the front-engine and front-drive architecture changed to a mid-engine setup with a transaxle driving the rear wheels. The narrow and simple bodywork of the stock 5 was festooned with massive flares, front air dam, and functional air intakes, creating one of the most evocative shapes of the era.
At the heart of the Turbo is a 1.4-liter inline four-cylinder fitted with a single turbocharger that was mated to a transaxle from Renault’s 30 TX sports sedan. The outlandish cosmetics continued into the car’s interior, with seats – perhaps the most attractive installed in any car – gauges, and upholstery that scream 1980s French excess. A Turbo II model was offered later, but it lacked most of the unique detailing of the first-generation cars, and purists agree that the earlier models are the ones to own.
This stunning Renault 5 Turbo is a 1981 model, and badged as number 632 of approximately 1,820 examples believed built. A description on file describes the Renault as a French-market example that was sold to Italy by 1991. At some point the car was painted blue, and circa 2015 it was sent to Piero Racing of Cassano Spinola, Italy for restoration in its original red. While records from the restoration do not accompany the car, it is reported that the engine was overhauled at this time, among other items.
Purchased by the US-based consignor in 2022, the Renault presents exceedingly well, reflecting an uncommon level of care taken during the prior refurbishment. It is accompanied by tools and handbooks, and received a recent oil change and new battery.
The driving experience offered by the Renault 5 Turbo is as unique as the car’s looks, and can only be described as fun, with its lightweight and high-strung engine proving surprising levels of performance. It is easily among the most dramatic and recognizable hot hatches ever built, and whether earmarked for road use or static display, deserves your closest attention.
