Beschreibung
The Renault 40 CV, built from 1911, was, for more than 15 years, the flagship of the brand from Billancourt. The 40 referred to the taxable horsepower and the six-cylinder inline engine over the years grew from the initial 7.5 litre in the CG to 8.5 litre in the ET, available from 1914, all the way to gigantic 9.1 litres in the HF, introduced in 1920. The NM model was the last of a long line and when the authorities gave the go-ahead for the model on the 28th January 1925, a successor was already on the drawing board. This gigantic upper-class saloon provided (a then enormous!) 140 horsepower and, with another example, modified to 200 horsepower and clothed in an aerodynamic body, a new world-record with an average speed of 173.649 km/h over 24 hours was achieved in 1926. Our example left works as a touring car with a separate windshield and a bar for the rear passengers and was most probably delivered in France. According to the information available, the NM was restored most probably in the 60s by Francis Mortarini in Montmorency before being exhibited - probably from 1968 - in the automobile museum in Nettelstedt. In 1971, shortly before the museum closed, the Renault was imported into Switzerland through Garage Eckert in Brugg and custom duties were paid on the 19th of April 1972. In January 1976, the car was acquired by a collector and in the next 43 years only driven on very special occasions. After his death in 2019, the tourer was taken over by the vendor, he himself a collector, and parked in his exhibition hall. This exceedingly rare Renault NM is in good overall condition and is drivable but, due to a long period of inactivity, certainly would require a major service and benefit from a thorough checkup. The car has been customs-cleared in Switzerland and will be handed over to the next enthusiast without any further documentation.
