As the company’s first turbocharged production-based racer, it was born from the fire and fury of the 930 Turbo, yet transformed into a machine purpose-built for dominance under the FIA’s Group 4 regulations. Only 31 of these factory-built 934s were ever produced, making each one a highly coveted rarity. Among them, chassis 0172 stands tall as not only one of the most successful in period but also one of the most faithfully preserved. Ordered new by Hamburg tyre magnate Richard Leder, the car was delivered directly from the factory and immediately put to use on Europe’s most iconic circuits. Leder entered six races in 1976, quickly showcasing the 934’s capabilities with an outright win at Kassel-Calden and another at Avus Berlin. Sadly, following a crash at the Nürburgring 1000km and Leder’s subsequent passing in a road accident, the car was acquired by Volkert Merl, who transitioned the car to 934/5 specification and continued its competitive streak with further success through 1977. The next chapter in this car’s story unfolded with Swiss Porsche dealer and gentleman racer Peter Zbinden, who, often partnered with fellow Swiss driver Edi Kofel, embarked on an intensive racing campaign between 1978 and 1980. They entered over 30 events together, earning an incredible string of results — 16 class or overall victories and a total of 29 podium finishes. The 934 continued to compete into the early 1980s under the stewardship of Pierre Schaerer before eventually landing with Zurich-based Peter Baumann, who initiated a proper and faithful restoration back to original Group 4 specification. Notably, the car retained nearly all of its factory Group 4 components even during its various specification upgrades — a testament to its careful ownership and historical foresight. This allowed for a meticulous and correct restoration, completed by Roock Sportsystem in Germany using its original parts, later verified by Prill Porsche Classics in the UK. Porsche expert Andy Prill described the car as “virtually totally original” and “probably the only surviving example of this quality.” Today, it presents exactly as it did in 1976 — from its fender flares and centre-lock BBS wheels to its iconic livery — and remains fully eligible for the world’s most prestigious historic racing events including Le Mans Classic, Monterey Motorsports Reunion, and Rennsport Reunion.
