OVERVIEW
Of all the many racing variants of Porsche’s venerable 911, starting with the 911R of 1967, the RSR evokes possibly the strongest reaction from marque enthusiasts today. Debuting in 1973 in 2.8-liter form, the RSR was Porsche’s entry into countless sports car races worldwide.

With the introduction of the G-bodied 911 for the 1974 model year, Porsche introduced a new RSR, this time with a 3-liter flat six and massive center-lock wheels covered in exaggerated fender flares. This ultimate expression of the normally aspirated 911 of the 1970s was built through 1976 and was a dominant force in endurance racing for many years.

The desirability of real RSRs have skyrocketed, and enthusiasm for the model shows no bounds. While the values of authentic examples have put them out of reach of many enthusiasts, replicating the core principles of the RSR has never been easier, and replicas such the one offered here are an increasingly popular choice for vintage racing enthusiasts.

Built as an homage to the original, this RSR was based on a 1976 911 tub, chassis number 9116200111. This is the 37th example built by the renowned John James Racing in Arizona, which has become a prolific source for grid-leading RSR-spec racers. The stock body shell was seam-welded and received all the appropriate modifications for competition use. It has been fitted with a full roll cage made from 1.5” DOM tubing, utilizing NASCAR-style door protection. The front bodywork, as well as the rear flares, tail and bumper, are all done in lightweight fiberglass, just as the original, and the windows are made from Lexan. Under the front hood is an aluminum fuel cell and oil tank, and the front oil cooler is installed in the middle of the front bumper.

The engine is a 3.4-liter unit built on a 3.0-liter aluminum engine case that has been fitted with a forged stroker crankshaft, Pauter Racing connecting rods and J&E forged pistons. The cylinder heads were ported and smoothed, and then converted to twin-plug ignition. John James Racing utilizes their own camshaft grind from Web Designs, with a useable powerband from 3,500-7,000 rpm, and a redline of 8,000 rpm. 50mm PMO carburetors handle fueling, while a J&B twin-plug distributor and dual MSD boxes are used for ignition

The type-915 gearbox was rebuilt with a shorter 5th gear, Wavetrack LSD differential, and new syncros and sliders. A Wevo billet shifter was installed to ensure durability and provide accurate gear changes.

Eschewing the torsion bar suspension from the standard 911, this car utilizes Bilstein coil-over racing dampers along with heim-jointed arms and Tarret Racing sway bars. Adjustable rear camber boxes were utilized, allowing for accurate alignment settings. Braking is handled by Brembo 4-piston calipers clamping iron rotors with aluminum hats and activated by twin Tilton master cylinders.
