For most Porsche aficionados, the 993-generation Porsche 911 Turbo occupies a deservedly exalted spot among Porsche models as the ideal iteration of the air-cooled, flat-six 911 formula. Although the 1997 model introduced some desirable refinements including a strengthened first-gear input shaft and a more adaptable OBDII system, all model years harnessed the same 408 horsepower through sequential twin turbos and all-wheel drive, delivering a zero to 60 mph time of 4.4 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 12.7 seconds. Significantly, the 911 Turbo paired this performance with impressive comfort and drivability, prompting Car and Driver magazine to label it "the planet's most eminently practical supercar."
This exceptional Porsche 911 Turbo is one of just 612 examples sold in the United States in 1997, and one of a very small handful finished in the subtle yet sophisticated shade of Slate Grey Metallic over optional Black supple leather upholstery. The Turbo was delivered new through Stead Motors of Walnut Creek, California, with an original MSRP of $111,222. Its original window sticker notes that it was optioned with metal door sills with insignia, black floor mats, and self-dimming mirrors & rain sensor. Its 18-inch Turbo Twist wheels are shod in staggered Michelin Pilot 4S tires and are accented by red Porsche-branded four-piston brake calipers, hinting at its era-defining performance capabilities.
The car's stamped service booklet shows that the new 911 Turbo was initially registered to a California Bay Area based owner, who had it serviced at the selling dealer on two occasions in 1997 before joining its second California owner in March 1998 with 8,659 miles. The 911 continued to receive service at regular intervals over the next several years courtesy of Porsche Beverly Hills, accumulating 23,028 miles by early 2005.
An extensive file of service invoices attests to the meticulous nature of the third, long-term owner, who commissioned several important services during their ownership from 2005 to 2021. Most notably, a valve job was performed in 2015 which encompassed replacing the cylinder head gaskets and lower valve cover gaskets, along with the clutch disc, pressure plate, and release bearing. In 2020, both the DME and turbochargers received necessary repairs, and new Michelin Pilot Sport tires were fitted to the distinctive hollow-spoke 18-inch Turbo Twist wheels. The Turbo passed through one further California-based owner before being relocated to Texas under current ownership in 2023.
Having covered just under 41,500 miles from new at the time of cataloging, this 911 Turbo presents in exceptional condition highlighted by its attractive Slate Grey Metallic finish, and is accompanied by its original window sticker, owner's manuals, Porsche-issued Certificate of Authenticity, tool kit, emergency air compressor, a clean CARFAX Vehicle History Report, and service documentation dating back to 1998. In preparation for auction, it has recently been serviced, dry ice detailed, and has undergone an exacting paint correction, resulting in an impressively detailed and ready-to-drive 993 Turbo. As one of the most sought-after variants of the final air-cooled 911, this well-maintained, nicely specified 993 Turbo would make a great addition to any collection of timeless Porsches, especially one with an emphasis on highly usable examples primed for enjoyment.
