Among American automotive manufacturers in the mid-1930s, Pierce-Arrow stood supreme. The Buffalo, New York company had endured the Great Depression, focusing on the inimitable combination of high-quality and speed records in the early 1930s, emerging on the other side with a range of large eight and twelve-cylinder cars that epitomized safety and luxury. For 1936, Pierce-Arrow distilled their model line into the De Luxe Eight and Salon Twelve offered in 139 and 144-inch wheelbase versions. The engine was a smoother-running alternative and more powerful than a contemporary Packard with its nine-bearing crankshaft. Among the De Luxe Eight series, the long-wheelbase Convertible Sedan was the smart choice with its 150 horsepower straight-eight engine and the open-topped body.
While the early history of this Pierce-Arrow is unknown, the car was purchased by Dr. Gerald Levisay in 2002. During his nearly 20 years of ownership, nearly every mechanical aspect of the car is reported to have been restored. This included a complete engine overhaul by marque expert Jan Appenzeller, including accessory components such as the generator, starter, carburetor, fuel pump, water pump, and distributor. It is also understood that the radiator, clutch assembly, and transmission were also overhauled by Appenzeller.
The current owner then purchased the car as a restored example in the fall of 2021. Finished in a period-correct light blue reminiscent of Parrot Blue over a correct style medium blue leather interior with grey Wilton wool carpeting, the car has a dark blue Stayfast canvas convertible top and a matching top boot. The interior features a dash-mounted Pierce-Arrow radio, a clock for the front passengers, and jeweled cigar lighters. The rear has a storage compartment below the lap robe rail and an additional Piece-Arrow clock. Uniquely, this convertible sedan has a striking low windshield that also cranks out for extra ventilation. Complete with painted wire wheels and shod with Lester Wide Whitewalls, the car carries dual-mounted spares with metal covers and locking hubcaps.
Today, this 1936 Pierce-Arrow De Luxe Eight Convertible Sedan is presented as a nicely preserved restoration. With a clean engine compartment, bright chrome work, and a gleaming Archer hood ornament, this car is furnished with a jack and lug wrench inside its built-in rear trunk.
