Chassis No. 26782318

Engine No. K407981

The 1952 Packard Pan American concept car represented a bold declaration that the company wasn't content to merely survive in the post-war luxury market-it wanted to thrive. Within months, Packard was working with Mitchell-Bentley Corporation to translate the concept's DNA into a production vehicle. The resulting 1953 Packard Caribbean stood as Packard's vision of post-war prosperity and design, even as the company itself faced an uncertain future. Mitchell-Bentley's Ionia plant hand-crafted just 750 examples using modified Cavalier convertible platforms. The styling was clean and distinctive: designers opted for minimal side trim and generous wheel openings, accenting the body with a dramatic full-width hood scoop and graceful "fishtail" fenders housing horizontal taillamps. Wire wheels and a Continental kit completed the dignified appearance.

This magnificent Caribbean was initially restored in the 1990s and subsequently underwent a comprehensive mechanical refurbishment circa 2009. The powerplant reportedly received a full rebuild with new pistons, rings, bearings, and valves, while both heads and the block underwent precise machining. The complex Ultramatic transmission was reportedly completely rebuilt to factory standards. The braking system evidently saw a complete renewal, including fresh wheel cylinders, shoes, lines, and master cylinder. Even the power-assisted controls for the soft top and windows were treated to new hydraulic components throughout.

The Caribbean entered the Academy of Art University Collection in 2010 showing just 8,199 miles since restoration, and is now offered with just 199 additional miles traveled. In 2021, in AAU's care, the brake booster was rebuilt and reinstalled to address a vacuum leak. Today, the Caribbean presents as a high-quality older restoration that has held up admirably. The tan power top conceals a stunning two-tone red and white leather interior that shows only minor evidence of careful use. Period-correct details like the Kelsey Hayes wire wheels, wide whitewall tires, Continental kit, red-painted dashboard, and factory radio complete this elegant package.
