The Morris Minor was an iconic car produced by Morris Motors from 1948 to 1971. Upon its debut at the 1948 Earls Court Motor Show, the Alec Issigonis design quickly became a symbol of post-war Britain, offering a two-door saloon and tourer initially, with a four-door saloon added in 1950. The estate version, the Traveller, launched in 1953, featured a distinctive ash wood frame.
In 1952, the Minor was re-engineered, replacing its original engine with an Austin-derived 803 cc A-series engine, improving performance. The Traveller's bodies were produced at MG's Abingdon factory due to Cowley's inability to handle wood-framed vehicles. Despite the launch of the Morris Mini in 1959, the Minor remained in production until 1971. It became the first British car to sell over a million units and is regarded as a classic example of automotive design. Autocar magazine described it as "... a primary way Britain got back on the road after the Second World War."
This 1959 Morris Minor 1000 Traveller was restored in the mid-1990s to a very high standard, with only 174 miles covered since. The car is believed to be an American market example, with the semaphores having been exchanged for contemporary fender-mounted turn signal lights. British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate also confirms that it was a De-Luxe, left-hand-drive model for export. Its distinctive ash wood frame shows remarkable joinery work, providing a splendid complement to the Old English White bodywork. Inside, the same attention to detail was provided to the tan upholstered interior. Under the hood, the engine compartment appears virtually new, with the same level of detail applied to the undercarriage. Complete with color-keyed steel wheels, chrome hubcaps, and BFGoodrich Silvertown white wall tires, this beautifully restored example is likely one of the finest examples, if not the finest, on the market today, complete with a binder of receipts documenting the process. It is sure to delight attendees at any number of automotive events, not only for its astonishing condition but also for its cheerful nature.
