The Model: For 1965, Mercury received a total redesign from the ground up. Starting with a new perimeter style frame, the new look tied Mercury ever closer to the Lincoln Continental, which also received a similar facelift that same year. While still sharing a number of engineering advancements with the fullsize Fords, Mercury was a step up, quieter, smoother rides, several exclusive engines and a distinct aura that brought Mercury buyers up to the level of Oldsmobile, Buick and Chryslers. These new designs won a lot of new Mercury owners seeing nearly a 66% increase in the production of full-size models including Park Lane, Montclair and the bestselling series, Monterey. A total of 16,857 2dr hardtops in this series was more than a 160% increase over the 1964 edition! With well-equipped example pushing the $4,500 envelope, Mercury had arrived and had solid footing in the upper-medium priced field.
The Car: According the history of this car, within a couple of months of being born, this Monterey “Marauder” hardtop was put into a climate controlled museum setting where it would remain for well over 40 years. At the time it entered storage just a bit over 3,700 miles were on the clock. Finished in Carnival Red, the interior is finished in black vinyl with fabric inserts for the front and rear bench seats. From what we gather, the car is sitting on its original tires with full wheel covers. Under the hood looks like a 3,900 mile vehicle, just a bit of wear and tear, while the trunk is like a time capsule, neat clean and preserved down to the spare which had never been mounted on the car. We do understand the original muffler was replaced within the past couple of years. This is your last chance to buy a practically new 1965 Mercury!
