At precisely 7:22 AM on 1 May 1955, the factory Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR driven by Stirling Moss and his navigator Denis Jenkinson left Brescia, Italy, to embark on the arduous 1,000-mile Mille Miglia race through the Italian countryside. At an average speed of 156 km/h, they completed the race in 10 hours, 7 minutes, and 48 seconds-a record never to be broken.
At the Paris International Motor Show 51 years later, on 28 September 2006, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 Edition was unveiled as a tribute to Moss and Jenkinson's performance in the iconic 300 SLR. A modern rendition of the Silver Arrow was born, engineered for performance and style, combining cutting-edge technology with classic design. The SLR McLaren had already seamlessly merged Mercedes-Benz's renowned elegance with McLaren's motorsport expertise. Drawing inspiration from the fabled 1955 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe, the design features a long, sculpted bonnet and a compact rear with aerodynamic elements, such as its arrow-shaped nose and twin aerofoils, which are a direct nod to McLaren's Formula One heritage, highlighting its high-performance capabilities.
The SLR 722 Edition enhanced this motorsport spirit by featuring lightweight forged aluminum 19-inch wheels for improved handling and powerful 390-mm front brakes. The fiery red brake calipers and the distinctive carbon fiber elements on the air splitter and rear diffuser only further highlight its dynamic character. Beneath the sleek exterior, the 722 Edition houses a 5.4-liter V8 engine developed by Mercedes-AMG, unleashing a formidable 650 horsepower. This engine enabled the car to accelerate from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 336 km/h. The AMG Speedshift R five-speed automatic transmission with multiple shift modes provided versatile performance, while the lightweight carbon fiber composite body ensured an optimal balance of strength and agility.
Most 722 Edition cars were finished in elegant Crystal Antimony Grey with Black-painted air outlets and a sporting interior with Black Semi-Aniline Leather and Alcantara upholstery. The "722" badge, bold stitching, and carbon fiber accents reinforce its motorsport heritage.
Ordered new by its original and current owner, this 722 is reported to be one of just two examples sold new in Belgium. Finished in Crystal Antimony Grey with the Black leather and Alcantara interior, it was optionally equipped with the Sports Package, Extra Large seats, and a trunk-mounted CD changer. Leaving the factory in April 2007, the car was first registered in Belgium on 9 May and has been sparingly used since, covering just over 11,000 kilometers at the time of cataloging. The car was last serviced in March 2023 by Mercedes-Benz Europa in Brussels, Belgium, with the service totaling nearly 12,000€.
Since its introduction, the SLR has remained a genuinely captivating special edition showcasing the engineering prowess of Mercedes-Benz and McLaren. Perhaps even more importantly, it reinforces the legacy of Stirling Moss and the Mille Miglia, wrapped in a technical package that features form and function in equal measure, and provides those behind the wheel a truly special experience.
