AMG Engine No. AMG 6.0 0185
Building upon the success of the R107, the R129 was the first new SL after 18 years when launched at the prestigious Geneva Motor Show in March 1989. Innovative use of lightweight aluminum, along with a new range of engines, truly modernized the model while continuing its heritage as a sporting and luxurious two-seater. As a signal of things to come, the R129 marked the first collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and AMG, a partnership that began in 1990, allowing these unique models to be directly ordered through Mercedes dealerships.
After competition at the Mercedes-Benz factory on 13 March 1992 in Brillant Silver Metallic (744) over a Black leather (261) interior, the car was transported to Affalterbach. Once there, the car received an all-new, 6.0-liter engine, which increased power to 381 horsepower. Complimenting the all-new engine, the car also received a new AMG 300 kph speedometer, AMG "Aero III" wheels, and an AMG exhaust. With this work completed, the car is reported to have been shipped to Japan shortly after. The AMG remained in Japan until early 2016, when it was reimported to Germany, where it stayed with two owners until it was purchased by the current owner and exported to the United States in 2022.
Today, this AMG SL remains in wonderful condition. The car has covered just under 110,000 kilometers or the equivalent of just over 68,000 miles at the time of cataloging. Additionally, it benefits from a recent comprehensive in-house service, including refinishing the wheels, fluid checkup, and soft top operation verification. Complete with a removable hardtop and a service book with stampings from Germany beginning in 2016, and this remarkable 1992 Mercedes-Benz SL 500 AMG 6.0, reported to be one of just 50 examples produced, is a shining example of the early collaborations between Mercedes-Benz and AMG.
