The elegant styling and undeniable appeal of the Mercedes-Benz 230 SL “Pagoda” made the German two-seater popular at the time of its first availability in the 1960s, and its long-lasting charm has sustained demand as a coveted collector car since then. First introduced in 1963 as the 230 SL, the new-generation W113 Mercedes-Benz roadster was designed by Paul Braq. The model earned its Pagoda nickname thanks to the distinctive concave removeable hardtop. The W113 established the blueprint for nearly all future SL models, combining luxurious trimmings, impeccably sophisticated style, and engineering excellence in a motorcar meant to deliver its occupants safely, rapidly, and in unrivaled comfort and style.
The series’ introductory 230 SL model featured a 2.3-liter inline six-cylinder engine equipped with fuel injection. Its four-speed automatic transmission had a rear-axle ratio perfect for comfortable, high-speed cruising. In total, Mercedes-Benz produced nearly 20,000 examples between March 1963 and January 1967.
Originally delivered with a Light Ivory exterior over a Caviar MB-Tex interior, this 230 SL has been well cared for by the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center USA in Long Beach, California. It had been previously recommissioned by another entity and received a subsequent full mechanical and interior refurbishment by the Classic Center in 2009 under prior ownership. Today, the exterior sports period-correct Dark Green paint over a Bamboo MB-Tex interior. Of particular note are the desirable four-speed manual transmission and luxury options, including power steering and a Becker Mexico radio. A hard top and tool roll are also included.
Under current ownership since 2010, this Mercedes-Benz has been part of a private collection stored in a climate-controlled facility. An onsite technician provided maintenance at regular intervals and the car received fresh fluids and necessary service within the last 50 miles.
With its stylish exterior, smooth ride, and competent performance, the “Pagoda” has remained a staple among discerning collectors, making this superlative 230 SL—one of the finest early examples on the market—according to a letter from the Classic Center, a highly desirable find indeed.
