The Mercedes-Benz 500E, the unprecedented car that was dubbed ‘a wolf in sheep's clothing’ on its debut, is now in our stock.

The 500E was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in 1990 and production began in the same year, with the later E500 model being produced in a total of around 10,500 units. Most were sold in Germany, but the 500E also proved popular in Japan, where nearly 1,000 units were imported. It is basically based on the W124, so its looks are simple, but it is powered by an M119 V8 5L NA engine (aluminium alloy block) developing 330 hp. Its drive is powerful yet silky, very smooth and beautiful. ‘FIRE AND SILK’ (‘passion of fire and grace of silk’ in the Japanese catalogue) - it's easy to see why.
To support the power transmitted from this engine, the brakes are enlarged and the suspension has been redesigned from the W124 and features a hydraulic auto-leveling mechanism. This mechanism prevents the car from moving too much at high speeds or in curves, so you can enjoy the sensation of being able to stick to the road surface.
The 500E was developed and produced by Daimler-Benz under contract to Porsche. Until 1992, the first model year, the production of the car body was also contracted out at the Zuffenhausen plant, known as the ‘Porsche Line’. It is said that it took nearly 15,000 hours to build a single car, as the production process was split between the Porsche and Mercedes-Benz plants. The price of a new car was 15.5 million yen, which was exceptional for a medium class.

The 500E presented here is an officially imported car with a mileage of 53,300 km, a rare low mileage one for a 500E. The interior and exterior are both in excellent condition with no complaints. The walnut panels are cracked in many vehicles, but there are no cracks/dulling. In January this year, spark plugs were replaced, front lower ball joint boot replaced, right tie rod end outer boot replaced, power steering return hose replaced, etc. It has a sunroof, so driving in autumn sunshine will be pleasant.
