The Mercedes-AMG GT R is probably the highest incarnation of a sports car according to Stuttgart so far: beautiful and drivable while being at the highest technical expression. The classic layout of the 585 hp front engine and rear-wheel drive is combined with the search for sophisticated active aerodynamics that react to driving conditions, all supported by track-ready electronic management . There is even a reference to the legend , the one that can be found in the grille with vertical strips that recalls the splendid 300 SL that in 1952 won the legendary Carrera Panamericana on Mexican roads.

The Mercedes-AMG GT R is not only the maximum evolution of the brand founded by Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher in 1967, a car so powerful that it can turn the Nurburgring in 7 minutes and 10 seconds. A result that is not surprising given that the coupe can reach 100 km / h from a standstill in 3.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 318 km / h .

In competitions there is the GT3 category where the cars are born as an evolution of sports cars regularly on sale. The philosophy of the Mercedes-AMG GT R is the opposite: it is practically a Mercedes-AMG GT3 authorized for road traffic . Furthermore, from this year a Mercedes AMG GT will be deployed both in the Italian GT Championship and in many international competitions including endurance races.

The racing approach on the Mercedes-AMG GT R is more than a slogan. To minimize unsprung masses, the double wishbone suspension has forged aluminum swinging elements, joints and wheel carriers. Much less weight, which is an advantage, combined with the potential of the adjustable suspension developed specifically for the new GT R, with coil-over shock absorbers to set the car's behavior in a personal way. More conventional, at least in theory, the electronically controlled Ride Control suspensions , with continuous adaptation to travel speed and ground conditions: the three setting levels, Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus, are entirely specific to this model.

The double-clutch transmission with seven gears remains structurally the same as GT and GT S, placed in transaxle, thus directly on the rear axle, to improve the distribution of weights. The first gear is longer and the seventh shorter, while the AMG Dynamic Select system now offers five programs: "C" (Comfort), "S" (Sport), "S +" (Sport Plus), "I" (Individual ) and "Race". The latter is calibrated to have “competition” ratios grafts. There is also an "M" mode in which the gearbox is forced exclusively in manual mode.

The full character of the GT R track animal shines through in Race mode , which requires almost millimeter steering and accelerator management to never let the engine drop in torque, abrupt to enter but very full-bodied in maintaining thrust in an extension almost comparable to that of a naturally aspirated engine.

Among the super sports cars, the GT is at an altitude of 462 horsepower and the GT S reaches 510 while the Mercedes-AMG GT R presents itself with 75 HP more than the latter, for a total of 585 horsepower, combined with a torque of 700 Nm between 1,900 and 5,500 rpm.
