- An extraordinary example of Mercedes-Benz’s most decadent and exclusive creation
The world’s most important people were driven in Mercedes-Benz 600s, and the top choice of this extremely exclusive model was the Pullman Landaulet. This custom-built car of state, constructed on an imposing 3,900-millimetre chassis, proved so exclusive that it was never actually included in the manufacturer’s catalogue. Each 600 was individually handcrafted by senior Mercedes-Benz craftsmen personally selected by factory managers, while the list of available options and finishes for each of the 26 long-wheelbase ‘Six-Door’ Landaulets built matched the unique personalities of their original owners—with a cost and level of labour intensity that was usually more often associated with bespoke private aircraft.
Delivered new as an official state limousine to the government of Portuguese Guinea (Guinea-Bissau) amid its revolutionary struggle in early 1974, this incredible “six-door, short roof” Pullman Landaulet is one of only a handful of examples produced in this configuration. This vehicle is also notably equipped with exterior handles on the middle door. An accompanying data card copy illustrates that it was originally specified with Black paintwork (040) over black leather upholstery and generously equipped with a Becker Grand Prix TR radio with remote control and automatic antenna, a Reims II adapter, Tekade BSA 21 car phone, under shields, tropical battery, and a standard flagpole mount for the right fender.
This 600 Pullman Landaulet remained in Africa for an unknown period before making its way to the United States; by 1991 it had been registered in California. Living in California until 2003, it was then imported to Germany.
In April 2010, it was purchased by a resident of Böblingen, Germany, who enjoyed the car without issue until 2019, when he commissioned 600 guru Kienle Automobiltechnik to execute a mechanical restoration which ultimately exceeded €280,000. Notable selections from the accompanying packet of Kienle invoices show complete rebuilds to the engine, gearbox, steering assembly, axles, Behr air conditioning system, and exhaust system. This Landaulet also received a full sorting of its notoriously tricky high-pressure hydraulic system, as well as new spring bellows, hoses, lines, adjustment rods, and a rebuild of the system’s compressor unit.
Beautifully presented in the period-correct colour scheme of White (050) over pristine red leather upholstery and a black Landaulet top, this “six-door, short roof” Pullman Landaulet is an extraordinary and distinguished example of Mercedes-Benz’s most decadent, exclusive creation.
