Beschreibung
- A homologation special jointly developed by Mercedes-Benz, Cosworth Engineering, and AMG
- The road-going version of the famous two-time DTM championship-winning race car
- The 263rd of just 502 examples produced
- Delivered new to Switzerland; acquired by the consignor’s family in June 2010
Mercedes-Benz and Cosworth Engineering’s jointly developed 190 E 2.3-16V sports saloon received its initial Group N homologation status in March 1984. Additional homologation variants—titled the “Evolution”—were aimed at the German Touring Car Championship (DTM) and further developed into two series released in 1986 and 1990, respectively.
These second-series cars benefit from further fettling by Sport+Technik, the Le Mans-winning collaboration between Mercedes-Benz’s sports department and AMG. Enhancements include a higher-revving, 235 PS engine, revised gear ratios, stiffer adjustable suspension, four-piston brakes, and an outrageous aero kit. The Evolution II proved a force in racing trim, claiming two DTM titles with Works driver Klaus Ludwig.
This Swiss-market Evolution II was completed in May 1990 and initially displayed in the showroom of the originating dealer prior to its first road registration in March 1991. Maintenance logs, sales documentation, and registration documents accompany the sale of the car.
In June 2010, it was acquired from its third recorded owner by the consignor’s family, and in their care has covered approximately 4,500 kilometers. With the odometer reading 37,300 kilometers at the time of cataloguing, this Evolution II would be a tremendous acquisition for any collector looking for an exceptionally well-documented specimen of this famous homologation special. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/mu22.
