- When discussing the finest Italian automobiles of the late 1960s and early 1970s, three cars top everyone’s list: the Lamborghini Miura, the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona, and the Maserati Ghibli.

Styled at Carrozzeria Ghia by Giorgetto Giugiaro and named after a Sahara Desert wind, the Ghibli was an immediate success, especially in Maserati’s largest market, the USA, where it became the ‘must have’ car for the rich and famous of the late 1960s, gaining a reputation for being not only a car to arrive in, but extremely impressive to drive as well.

In 1970 Maserati extended the Ghibli range with an optional 4.9-liter V-8, which provided an additional 25 horsepower.

Offered concurrently with the original 4.7-liter version, the new SS 4.9 was catalogued with chassis numbers integrated into overall Ghibli numbering, and Maserati Classiche confirms that only 425 Ghibli SS Coupes were built.

Ghibli production ended in 1972 after a total of 1.280 examples had been built.

ABOUT THIS SPECIFIC EXAMPLE

According to the Maserati Classiche build record, this Ghibli was completed at Maserati’s Modena workshops in 1971 and was it was delivered to it’s 1st owner in Rome in April 1971 through Maserati’s flagship dealership, Autosport in Bologna. The first owner was a lady, a so-called Mrs. Pasquini.

It was built in a beautiful and rare exterior colour of “Verde Gemma” with a White Connolly hide interior.

Later in its life, in 1989, this example was purchased by the President of the UK Maserati Club, Mr. Fyshe, as a part of his exceptional collection of Maseratis. This Maserati remained with him for Twenty-Five years.

Mr. Fyshe sent the Ghibli SS to the Maserati specialist McGrath Maserati for a comprehensive mechanical and cosmetic restoration, including a fabulous refinish in the period-correct color of Rosso Cordoba, and re-upholstery of the leather interior.

The quality of the restoration was impressive and the car still looks in a magnificent condition.

Maintained throughout by Bill McGrath, its last public appearance while in Alexander Fyshe’s ownership was at the Maserati gathering for the centenary at Silverstone in 2014.

It is accompanied today by extensive service invoices from 18 years of service by McGrath Maserati with both current and previous owners.

In 2018 the Maserati was sold to a collector in Holland. A large collector with a serious amount of cars in his collection. This gentlemen used the car for some Maserati events and trips and decided to trade in his car for a Ferrari 250 GT Pininfarina Coupé.

CONDITION EXTERIOR

The body of the Maserati has been restored by Prestige Restorations as there was need for the highest quality and attention to detail during the restoration.

The car spent four years in a body restoration so one can understand that the exterior is in a beautiful condition.

The different aluminium and chrome parts are still in a beautiful condition giving the Maserati today a very beautiful and fresh appearance.

CONDITION INTERIOR

The interior design of the Ghibli is a beautiful place to spend time in.

When you take a seat in the Ghibli you immediately feel yourself part of the 1969 Italian Job movie.

The seat position is difficult to describe as one has to feel it but believe us, when you take position in this Ghibli you immediately understand that this is a very special car which is very special to drive.

Condition wise the interior is very nice. One can find here and there some minor signs of use. Name it a correct patina for the age of the car.

All meters, gauges and knobs are in a superb looking and perfect working condition.

DRIVING EXPERIENCE

We wrote it many times before that the same type of car can drive completely different.

That’s certainly the case with this Ghibli. This Ghibli is by far the best driving example we have ever driven.

The handling, the engine power and the sound result in an amazing experience but more important we never had a Ghibli which was handling so perfect as this car.

A Ghibli is always a joy to drive but every Maserati specialist will confirm that it will be difficult to find a better driving example.

We believe the Ghibli is one of the most stunning sports cars ever made, the Ghibli was a worthy rival for the Ferrari Daytona and represents exceptional value for money today, just as it did 40 years ago.
