MODEL HISTORY
The Maserati 3500 GT was presented to the public for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show in 1957. Being the first “mass-produced” car in the history of Maserati it played a significant role for the company. Compared to its main competitors like the e.g. the Ferrari 250 GT, the Maserati proofed to be a success. Between 1957 and 1964 Carrozzeria Touring built 1973 units in total with 441 being the later GTI models which was only available from 1961 until 1964. From 1965 onwards, the shorter Chassis of the Vignale Spyder was used for the 3500 GTI Sebring which had a totally different bodystyle. The engine of the 3500 GT was derived from the race engine of the Maserati 350S, being an in-line six-cylinder with twin spark ignition. The earlier GT cars were equipped with three Weber twin carburettors that produced between 220-230 horsepower. Contrary the later GTI models were fitted with a Lucas injection which lead to a slight increase in horsepower up to 235. Most of the early cars came with a manual four-speed transmission that was later replaced by a manual five-speed transmission by ZF. Optional the cars could also be ordered with a 3-speed automatic transmission. The model was launched with drum brakes at all four wheels. In 1959 customers could choose disc brakes for the front axle which were fitted as standard by 1960.
ABOUT THIS 3500 GT(I)
Our car originally left the factory in 1962 as a GTI. This car is also fitted with options like e.g. electric power windows. Since the Lucas injection wasn’t very reliable many GTI cars were converted to GT specification by replacing the injection system by carburettors which is also the case for this car. The vehicle was first registered on the 1st of July in 1962. Not much is known about the early history of the car until it was registered with a new owner in the south of Germany. During his ownership the car appeared in a road test in the issue 10-2001 of the classic car magazine “Motor Klassik”. In 2006 the owner participated with the car in the Silvretta Classic. In 2015 the car was sold to its last owner, another German gentleman. He kept the car for a couple of years until B.I. Collection AG bought in December 2018. After being imported into Switzerland the car was subject to an extensive restoration which was carried out at the highest standard. This resulted in an overall expense of more than 140.000 CHF. Today the car is being presented in Grigio on the exterior over a Nero interior. The odometer displays a current mileage of 109.992 km. The body is in stunning condition, as are the interior and the engine. A truly exquisite example of one of Maserati’s most famous grand tourers.
