Beschreibung
Designed by Giulio Alfieri and bodied by Touring, the 3500 GT was a luxury 2+2 coupe that benefited heavily from Maserati’s previous racing experience. Beneath its elegantly styled Superleggera (Super light) body, consisting of a steel frame wrapped in aluminum panels, sat a tubular chassis and a DOHC inline six-cylinder engine derived from the 350S sports car.
Built in June 1961, the Maserati 3500 GT coupe presented here was delivered new to Milan sporting a stunning color combination of Grigio Inglewood Metallizzato (Medium Metallic Grey) over a black leather interior. An early example, it features the desirable three-carburetor setup, front disc brakes, steel Borrani wheels, and a ZF five-speed manual gearbox. The 3500 GT eventually made its way to the US, where it was acquired by Maserati Club International member and enthusiast Tom Geiger of Santa Maria, California. Geiger commissioned a professional restoration, including an engine rebuild by a local Maserati specialist, and he showed the car at the 2005 Concorso Italiano in Monterey. Under the current owner’s direction, Italian car specialist Steve Mastroianni and his team at Auto Turismo Sport of New Milford, Connecticut, performed servicing work totaling just over $12,000, with attention to the car’s fuel and brake systems, carburetors, and water pump.
Finished in silver over its lovely black interior, this is a handsome, tastefully presented example of one of the marque’s first significant production models, and is sure to appeal to Maserati cognoscenti.
