The 3200 GT, the first car developed by Maserati after it was taken over by the Fiat group, signalled the revival of the marque. Marking the start of this new era, this genuine GT carried over the philosophy of the models sold during the 1980s and ‘90s, thanks in particular to its twin-turbo engine. Styled by ItalDesign, the studio run by the great Giugiaro, its design is magnificent in every way, while the famous ‘boomerang’ rear lights add a final touch to assert the personality of this Italian beauty. Its charm is assured, but its mechanical specification is just as convincing, even though the 3200 was designed to remain a notch below its cousin from Maranello, the Ferrari 360 Modena, which went on sale a few months later. Nonetheless, with the 370bhp developed by the V8 and the boost produced by its turbos, its maximum torque of 491Nm exceeded that of the naturally aspirated V8 from Maranello. From 2500rpm, the turbos spool up and catapult the 3200 GT forward! Initially offered with a six-speed Getrag manual gearbox, a year after it was introduced it received an optional torque-converter automatic transmission. Just three years after its launch, the 3200 GT was dropped from the range, its boomerang lights – which could not be homologated in the United States – to blame. It left its place to the 4200 GT, which had more conventional rear styling.

The model which we are offering for sale is in remarkable condition and has a clear history. Delivered new by the official importer Charles Pozzi in Levallois on 16 July 1999, this Maserati 3200 GT with manual transmission stayed with its first owner for nearly two years. Its second and current owner purchased it from Pozzi in Levallois on 12 June 2001, when the odometer was reading 15,000km (9300 miles). When we tested it, it was reading 113,860km (70,750 miles), which would appear to be corroborated by the original service booklet and the substantial file of invoices accompanying it. Maintained by the Charles Pozzi dealership in Levallois, in July this splendid example of the 3200 GT also received a complete detailing treatment of the bodywork and a ceramic coating, carried out by the specialist workshop Msirius at Croissy-sur-Seine. The timing belt was replaced in January 2016, all the interior equipment works perfectly and the original Becker radio will be supplied with the car. It was a great pleasure for us to take our place in the car, the carpets and especially the leather upholstery having been perfectly cared for. Fitted with the stainless steel exhaust system, an option available from the factory, the Maserati is nonetheless unobtrusive, but the fabulous V8 makes itself known when you put your foot down, with the help of the twin turbos, which emphasise the whole car’s fiery character. With its impeccable handling, the car is very versatile outside town. Rarely found in this condition and with so comprehensive a history, this 3200 GT represents an attractive opportunity to acquire a model which now deserves to be collected.
